Fort Hayes - Masters in Liberal Arts - Global Management - Nodaclu - 05-04-2018
Hi all,
Curious about your thoughts regarding this program.
For someone like me - with a career in HR (stuck at the "Mid-Career Professional" level, trying to move into Management), a nearly completed BA in Psychology, and as someone who looks at Finance and Accounting coursework as if it's written in another language, would this be a viable "compromise" option?
Or would it be viewed, in the absence of an MBA, as essentially worthless for improving my career in HR?

Not worthless, but what if it makes the difference between getting a job or not? I think they would see it as being below all the MBA degrees. If you feel like you can stand out from the candidates in other ways, this could be fine. I looked at the courses. Interesting degree.

The coursework was interesting to me as well.
I'm genuinely concerned about my intellectual capacity when it comes to an MBA program. I didn't pass a statistics class until my 7th try, for example. And I've tried digging into Finance and Accounting classes at Study.com, and couldn't even comprehend the basics.
At a certain point, I may come to the conclusion that getting an MBA is beyond my reach (no shame in knowing your limits, I reckon). If that's going to happen, I think I'd rather pursue this and take my chances, then have no graduate degree at all.

You're already an established professional, so it's not as big a deal for you to get another business-type degree rather than an MBA. However, don't HR managers have to develop budgets, and perhaps also work with some financial ratios?
EDIT: I see quite a few courses that would be of great relevance to an HR specialist. I say go for it- your work experience is your trump card anyway.

I think other degrees would be fine. HR is kind of it's own little world in Business, not quite so "business-y" as the rest. You should really look at HR jobs (the kind you want) to see what they ask for. Also, ask some of the HR managers at your company what their degrees are in. You will find many don't have Business degrees, and many don't have Master's degrees.
I will say this though: if your Bachelor's degree isn't in business, then your Master's should be (at least a little). One or the other should have some sort of business focus. This degree should fit the bill.

Since posting this a few hours ago, I received a job offer as a Sr. Benefits Analyst for a large healthcare organization - which is basically my dream job in HR at this stage of my career. It's not management, but it's a big step up for me - less administrative, and more strategic. Never quite believed it would happen, but here we are!
That crystallizes some things for me now. At my age, and knowing my strengths and weaknesses, it's very likely that I'll only ever go one step higher than this - to a Benefits Manager. So I'm going to plan the rest of my education around that.
Because this position is going to be more strategic and project-based, my new post-undergrad plan is to seek either the CEBS or CBP Benefit Certification, and a PMP Certification. From there, I'll continue to look at this program from Fort Hays, and I'll also keep Patten's MBA-HR in mind. I'll also ask my new Manager and Director for their thoughts as well at the appropriate time(s).
In the span of just a few short hours, my life and some of my plans going forward have all shifted dramatically!!

Congrats on the new job, but don't think that you're limited on where you can go from there! A degree is a major factor in moving up, and you'll have that soon enough. Think big!

Definitely! I just haven't been able to find many low-cost, fully online MS-HR grad programs.
