AFFORDABLE Masters Degree in Teaching/Education? - acamp - 06-02-2018
Hi everyone and happy Saturday!
Does anyone have a list or can direct me to a link of the cheapest paths to obtain a Masters degree in either education, teaching, or anything within?
From what I see, I think WGU may be the most cost-effective option even though their 36 “units” don’t really equate to 36 credits so it seems to be more classes than the typical 12 classes for the masters.
If anyone can chime in, I would appreciate it.
Also, I’m not necessarily looking for masters degree in a certain subject area, but more general masters in education/teaching/administration, etc.

I suspect that WGU is going to be tough to beat on price, that is even before the possible scholarships they offer (even at the Master's level).
However, someone (sorry I forget who) recently posted about the American College of Education (ACE - https://www.ace.edu/) programs, and they are quite affordable as well. Not to be confused with the ACE (American Council on Education) we normally refer to here regarding undergrad credits

WGU is so cheap, and they give a lot of scholarships.
ACE is one of the cheaper ones, but it's about $8500 and doesn't take federal financial aid.
Liberty is cheap with the military discount.

WGU also isn't a great bet if you don't want to be a teacher. Most of their MA/MS degrees are for licensed teachers, and the ones that aren't are for people who WANT to be licensed teachers (so it requires a semester of in-classroom teaching).
ENMU and WNMU both offer MA degree in the fields you want - and if you take your time getting through them, are decently priced. Out-of-state tuition for someone taking 6cr or less per semester (and 3cr in summer) is the same as in-state - $299.41/cr. So it would be around $10k and at least 2 years to complete.

Thanks ideas. For ACE, is that $8500 for the entire masters degree?

Thanks Dfrecore. Would you say that those two degrees would be cheaper if I took my time or would ACE still be a bit cheaper? Wasn’t sure how they matched up in regards to cost for the same degree

It's really cheap compared to most schools. They have a chart (without WGU on it) showing that their price is the best.

That one is just a bit more than $9,000.
I would probably pick any of these state universities over ACE if it was a thousand dollars difference between them. I also think that there could be a value play in there somewhere by finding a school that accepts larger than normal transfer credit and taking dirt cheap education credits somewhere.

If you want an mba or masters in education or teaching, you have lots and lots of choices. Those seem to be the go-to when a college wants to offer online masters degrees.

True - especially the online route. But I wasn’t sure which would be the cheapest route with all the options

WGU would be if you want online and don't have some special situation like employer reimbursement.
