Pierpont Questions - Mab81 - 08-19-2018

Hi everyone, I am currently in a situation where I need an associate's from a regionally accredited college in order to meet my GenEd requirements for a local university. My plan had been to get the TESU ASBA. I am only 3 classes away from meeting the requirements (via SL, Study.com and ALEKS). However, the cost of the waiver is a problem. I unexpectedly had to buy a newer car last month and now paying $3,000 up front with no financial aid is going to be a struggle.

With that back story out of the way, I have seen some people on here mention Pierpont BOG AAS. For those of you who have this, can you please clarify a few things? I searched the old threads but I did not find exactly what i needed.

-- The website for this degree says: "to fulfill residency requirements a minimum of 12 credit hours must be completed from a regionally accredited higher educational institution." All my credits are from SL, Study.com or ALEKS, does that mean I can't do this degree? Or do i have to take courses through Pierpont?

-- Not sure what the PLA's entail, it looks like they're saying you can ask for credit for work experiences but I'm not sure.

I am just trying to see if this is a viable option for a cheaper Associates that may be accepted by my local university. Thanks everyone.

"All my credits are from SL, Study.com or ALEKS, does that mean I can't do this degree? Or do i have to take courses through Pierpont?"

Correct. You could take 12 credits through pierpont, an online college or another local community college. Of course, that makes the total cost go up pretty quick.

6 credits at Luna Community College = $228

Sometimes a college that will accept an associate's for GenEds does not consider an AAS to qualify as it does not have the same GenEd requirements that an AA or AS does. Make sure your school will accept it before substituting an AAS.

There is another wrench I need to throw in here. Currently, Pierpont will not send a transcript unless you've taken a class with them. More here:

In addition to what everyone else said, Pierpont takes a while to process requests for their AAS. You might be better off trying to use CLEP tests to get out of the GenEd requirements you need to complete.

I feel like the hoops you're going to need to go through to get the AAS would make this degree a lot of trouble-
(1) you'd have to apply/enroll somewhere to take classes
(2) upon completion of the semester/year, you'd have to forward them to Pierpont
(3) you won't get a transcript when you finish- even though you'll have a degree, NO TRANSCRIPT
(4) your CC probably won't allow an AAS to count for gen eds since by definition, AAS degrees are MISSING the gen eds to make room for non-gen eds
(5) you'll need confirmation from your CC that this degree will do what you want it to (again, without being able to produce a transcript)
(6) you'll need to confirm that your CC won't care that your credits are from Study/SL/etc. and allows that
(7) you'll be putting a LOT of work into earning 2 associate degrees - over a year before you even get this done. In about year, you could start from scratch and do an entire Bachelor's using Study/SL/ACE, etc.
