GPA and Credit Transfer/Credit Evaluation - pws - 11-07-2018

If you have your transcript evaluated by a credit evaluation company, I'm fairly certain the GPA calculated will be based on all the courses on the transcript, correct? However, if only say 15 credits are transferrable, how does having a GPA based on 40+ credits make any sense? Can you ask the credit evaluation company to calculate the GPA based on the transferable credits, or will universities like TESU calculate the GPA themselves, based only on the transferred credits?

TESU will calculate their own GPA based on credits taken at TESU. They will also calculate a GPA from the transfer credits they accept to make sure you comply with the minimum GPA for transfer courses (I think 2.0). Finally they will calculate a "overall" GPA which includes all of the above. I don't think that any GPA the credit eval company calculates (if they even do) will matter.

So, you are saying that if we scored in the 85-90 range on study.com, that does make a positive difference to the overall GPA? So far, my scores have been very good. But I used to wonder if it would make any difference, as none of these grades will show up in my final transcript. Why does TESU choose not to reveal grades earned through other providers on their transcript?

TESU doesn't give grades for Study.com courses (or other ACE/NCCRS credit), they only give a CR if you transfer a course in, which doesn't calculate into your GPA.

Most schools don't give GPA for transfer credits from anywhere.  So, for example, I went to 2 CC's and 3 4-yr schools.  At each school, I have a separate GPA based entirely on what grades I got taking courses at each of those schools.  But my GPA didn't transfer between schools.

A school may use your previous GPA, or calculate a GPA for some reason (just like a grad school might do), but your actual GPA doesn't transfer around, it sits at each individual school.  For that reason, your ACE/NCCRS course GPA can't transfer either, because it's "sitting" at the course provider.

That’s what I believed- that my ACE credits will not impact my GPA in any way. And I often wonder why they do not let your GPA transfer. Is it bcos grading methods differ between different institutions? So, what might be graded a B in COSC might be a C in some other university?

You may want to re-read what davewill and dfrecore indicated. There are so many variables in play, but in essence, it's all internal/external GPA at every school. You can take a course from one provider and transfer to another institution as long as it's accepted, but the GPA is an external GPA for their calculations, they can't add that GPA into their transcript as those would be only used for courses taken at each individual school. You will get the credit for the course required for your diploma or degree.

I recall from High School to College/University, it's the same thing - grades are used for admissions and other standards vary, like the tri-semester/quarter credit system, the % required for each course to attain a specific grade letter. So, if I was in India or US, and I transfer from College A to University B, my GPA from College A is used for admissions and is an external GPA. Courses I take at Uni B have their own internal GPA.

For Grad schools will look at the GPA and other requirements for admissions as well, again, if you've gone to multiple schools, they'll need to know where/what courses were taken and evaluate them accordingly. Don't think too much on this, use your time to get yourself that degree and work hard on a better GPA at the current institution. Courses that are ACE/NCCRS are always pass/fail like many college challenge exams, there are no grades to them.

In most cases, the new school won't even LOOK at the GPA from the old, but will insist on calculating one by their own rules. For example, some schools will let you replace a C, D, or F by retaking a course. The new school may only allow that for D and F grades, or may not allow that at all and will insist on including either both grades or only the first one in their calculation. This is why schools carry all those replaced courses on their transcripts even if they are not counting them in your GPA any longer. It can work the other way, too, with the new school being more generous than the old one. Some schools have grade forgiveness programs for students who return after an extended period. Unfortunately, the forgiveness doesn't necessarily extend to the next school you attend.

For grad school admissions, they may only look at the GPA for last 60 units, or may want to separately enforce a higher GPA for certain prerequisite courses.

For TESU, the only purpose seems to be to enforce their policy of a minimum 2.0 GPA on courses transferred into the degree. I believe the only result from not making that 2.0 is the removal of "D" graded courses until you DO meet it.

As far as I can tell, the GPA on your transcript is only used the school itself to verify you qualify to graduate, and by employers, or other non-academic orgs, who would never bother to do the calculation (they usually can hardly be bothered to verify the degree itself).

Because they didn't give you the grade, they are simply acknowledging that you earned credit. Your GPA at any school will be a number based on the courses you've taken with them (they've personally evaluated you).

Just wondering, if a failed course taken at TESU doesn't apply to my new degree plan, will that still be calculated on my GPA?

Yes.  Every course you take at a school is calculated in.
