Out of order unit on Onlinedegree.com Computer Science - camjenks - 12-16-2018 First of all, I think this is a great course so far. Very challenging, but I've learned a lot and I think the material is covered well. However, I really started getting confused on some of the later units and struggling to put things together. It turns out that one of the units is skipped and appears later in the course, so I was missing an introduction to a bunch of the concepts that were being built on. The lesson: Algorithms - Searching and Sorting appears as lesson 23, but it should be lesson 20. I remember the outro of lesson 19 video saying that algorithms was next, but shrugged it off thinking the lesson just had a different title. I was then pretty confused through all of the next 3 lessons covering recursions and graphs because it kept mentioning things that had apparently been covered that I couldn't remember or find in my notes. Finally, when I got to the algorithm video I realized what had happened. I feel like I need to redo those 3 lessons I was confused on to try to piece it all together. At least I still did ok on the quizzes for those so it didn't bring down my grade. The same lesson order error is on the website that the main videos link to (https://onlinedegree.kanopy.com/?utm_medium=display&utm_source=embed-more-videos&utm_campaign=349913-algorithms-searching-and-sorting). However, I think I found the original sources for the course at The Great Courses (https://www.thegreatcoursesplus.com/show/how_to_program_computer_science_concepts_and_python_exercises), and that website has things in the correct order. I already reported the issue, so hopefully it gets addressed. Just wanted to post a heads up in case anyone taking this has the same confusion that I had. It sucks because you can't even access the lessons until you've completed the previous one, so even knowing this we'll be stuck doing the course out of order until it gets fixed. Edit: Actually, maybe you can just go to https://onlinedegree.kanopy.com/?utm_medium=display&utm_source=embed-more-videos&utm_campaign=349913-algorithms-searching-and-sorting and watch the video. If that works for anyone, at least watch algorithms video and understand it before starting on the graphs lessons. RE: Out of order unit on Onlinedegree.com Computer Science - MNomadic - 12-16-2018 Thanks! That will be very useful to know when I resume that course later. RE: Out of order unit on Onlinedegree.com Computer Science - dfrecore - 12-16-2018 Really good to know! I was thinking of having my kid take this, I'm 100% positive he would freak out and give up if I wasn't aware of this problem (and the workaround). Thanks for letting us all know! RE: Out of order unit on Onlinedegree.com Computer Science - Ideas - 12-16-2018 Thanks for reporting this. There was another lesson where I'm not sure if videos were missing. It was lesson 10 or thereabouts. It had the same YouTube videos as lesson 7 or thereabouts. The topic was similar, but it made me rewatch the videos I had already watched. I think it was just that the youtube videos covered topics from several different lessons, so they got put in more than once. There were a few youtube videos that were part of a playlist and I ended up going to it on youtube to play a previous video to understand what was being talked about in the video. Minor issues. |
