I am planning on taking the calculus clep in the near future. I took the varsitytutors practice test https://www.varsitytutors.com/begin-clep_calculus_1-problems. It seemed to be much harder than the other practice tests I took - it covers topics the other ones don't. Is the test this hard?

Have you looked at the CLEP Official Guide Practice Test? I am not familiar with the brand you used, but the Official Guide will give you an idea of level of difficulty.
