New Degree at WGU - Health Services Coordination - sanantone - 09-08-2019

I don't understand the purpose of this degree. I thought WGU specialized in degrees that lead directly to jobs, but here it is.

I'm confused as to the distinction between this and their B.S. Business/Healthcare Management degree

RE: New Degree at WGU - Health Services Coordination - cookderosa - 09-09-2019

From what they list, their targeted occupations for a Health Services Coordination degree are:
Possible jobs:
Care coordinator
Patient advocate
Health services coordinator
Patient educator
Community health educator

where their Management degree is for administration. I think the admin degree probably tracks to a higher paying role, especially if you're a former practitioner. The coordinator classes and degree may be more targeting careers that stem from social sciences (I'm thinking WIC or nutrition) as well as those in allied health fields or private companies that provide in-home services (non-medical aids) or even YMCA educator types.

I see it as a "soft health" path. Probably not good to break into a field- maybe good to check a box if you're in a field.

They're targeting EMTs, CNAs, and medical assistants. From what I've seen, the career prospects WGU lists often don't require a degree, and they are typically low-paying jobs. Other than community health educator, those are mostly customer service roles.

It looks like a watered-down version of their health information management program mixed with some healthcare management. The health information management program includes IT courses, and it leads to a certification. Healthcare management is a sub-field of business administration.

I saw this degree on their website the other day and thought "why in the world would anyone want this?" Even the name is lame.

And, not one of those jobs requires a health services coordination degree. Two of them don't require a degree at all. A couple of them didn't mention anything about major, and a couple of them asked for a degree in a related field. So, I did a search on Indeed to see if there were job postings asking for specific majors. There were some that wanted public health, nursing, or health administration degrees; there were some that wanted psychology and social work degrees; and there were some more that required no degree.

I conducted searches using alternate forms of "health services coordinator." At most, I could find 119 jobs in the entire country. So, I'm still trying to figure out why WGU thought this degree was needed. Years ago, I heard a rumor that they were developing a social work degree. What happened with that? There are almost 50,000 job openings on Indeed.

Degrees are always developed because of customer demand. Always.

RE: New Degree at WGU - Health Services Coordination - bluebooger - 09-16-2019

the job title of the very first one is Health Services Coordinator
and requires
Education: Bachelor’s degree in relevant field

you couldn't be more relevant than a bachelors degree in Health Services Coordination

you even said "and a couple of them asked for a degree in a related field."

so yeah, a degree in Health Services Coordination would be a related field would it not ?
unless you have a different definition of "related"

" So, I did a search on Indeed to see if there were job postings asking for specific majors. There were some that wanted public health, nursing, or health administration degrees; there were some that wanted psychology and social work degrees; and there were some more that required no degree. "

so what's your point ?

I work in a hospital as a data analyst
I have no degree

does that mean WGU's Data Analyst degree is useless just because I can go to indeed and find some data analyst positions that ask for computer science degrees, statistics degrees, information technology degrees or even like my own positoon, no degree ?

LOL, just because you can find some Health Services Coordinator positions that don't specify "required: a bachelors in Health Services Coordination" doesn't mean the degree is useless

I'm sure there are more than 119 data analyst job openings in the entire country. Since health services coordination didn't exist as a major until WGU invented it, I'm sure it's not something HR even thinks about when writing up job descriptions. Yeah, it would be considered a related degree depending on the type of health services coordinator position, but people didn't need that degree to get the job. There are already people with public health and nursing degrees working those jobs. It's a new, niche degree program that might pigeonhole job applicants.

Homeland security degrees are similar. They've been around for a while now, and they still aren't marketable degrees.

When people ask if they should get a certain degree to land a certain job, I tell them to consider these two things. Will the degree make you more competitive, or can you get the job with a more marketable major? If it turns out you don't like the job or can't get hired for whatever reason, can you use the degree for something else?
