Degree plan Charter Oak with goal of Georgia Tech OMSCS - StudentOLife - 03-27-2020

Hi there,

Long time lurker, first time poster here.

Context:
I'm an international student accepted by Charter Oak(COSC) but it is for Business Administration(General Business) with 43 credits left to complete(77 accepted). Not a whole heap of college Math subjects or CS background aside from CS50 MOOC. [Aced GCE O'level's Maths in Secondary(high?) school if any consolidation]

- Based on CED: I' have the equivalent of a high school diploma & 3 years of undergraduate study in business from a regionally accredited US college or university.

- Based on ECE: I've got equivalent of a high school diploma & Associate degree, major area of study: Business Administration.

Goal:
Pivot into computer science, particularly Georgia Tech's Masters of Science, Computer Science online degree.

My current pivot plan:
Option 1) Complete the Bachelors of Business in Charter Oak + taking supplement courses from 3rd party(*Saylor, Study.com, TECEP, Coopersmith, Straighliner) to buff up my Masters application and if possible fill out parts of my 43 credits.

Option 2) Enroll in Charter Oak, take:
  • "MAT 105 - Statistics", "CSS 435"(is this a repeat of my business statistics?) &  "CSS435 - Fundamentals of Network Security"? (not many CS subjects in COSC)
  • take CS related courses from 3rd party(*see option 1),
  • test out what I cannot avoid
  • take CS related courses from 3rd party(*see option 1),
  • test out what I cannot avoid to complete my Gen Ed courses(could even get an Associates Degree?)
Then transfer to Western Governor University(WGU)'s Computer Science Bachelors to finish.

Option 3) Looking for expertise here to help edit my plan to make it better/faster/less costly.
(ie. get re-evaluated in COSC for a general ed degree with concentration in informations systems for more flex?)

Question:
- With my goal in mind, which option would you recommend and would you tailor it, if so how?
- Is this the right forum to post the question, or is there a better sub?

Really appreciate this. If it helps my credits accepted are per below(split into a reply)

WGU is for US students only

Degree plan Charter Oak with goal of Georgia Tech OMSCS - posabsolute - 03-28-2020

Hmmmm personally I think your application would be better with a computer science degree.

That would leave you with the TESU BACS option since you can’t do WGU.

StudentOLife, where are you from and where are you now? That's a lot of info, however, not the info that I need to help you further. Can you give me more of your background (plus how you did in college?) and also why you chose Business then and Comp Sci now? Further to that, why COSC & Georgia Tech, do you have another option you're looking at, like any another Masters?

Goal:
Pivot into computer science, particularly Georgia Tech's Masters of Science, Computer Science online degree.

*Edit Here are the courses I likely need to finish, either in a school or online then get credits recognised in COSC:
  • Study.com - Comp Sci 109: Introduction to Programming
  • Study.com - Comp Sci 201: Data Structures & Algorithms
  • Study.com - Math 104: Calculus
  • Study.com - Math 108: Discrete Mathematics
  • Study.com - Comp Sci 305: Operating Systems
  • Study.com - Comp Sci 306: Computer Architecture
  • TECEP - Network Technology
  • Study.com - Comp Sci 303: Database Management
  • Study.com - Comp Sci 302: Systems Analysis & Design
  • Coopersmith - Linear Algebra
  • Straigherline - Introduction to Programming in C++
  • Study.com - Comp Sci 103: Computer Concepts & Applications

TESU possibly, or maybe a school better known for CS to and finish there.

Hey @bjecheug77, so glad my post caught your attention, i've seen you help so many people and thank you so much for your good work in the forum.

I've posted/edited my post with edits (ctrl+f and type in "*edit" to find the edit points) hopefully answer your questions.
I'm open to other Masters, but would prefer GTech as based on research, it's the best value for quality.

But essentially, *Edit:  Did not do too well in my polytechnic, 2.52GPA. Have got over 10 years work experience and am now a project director. Haha, thanks... I knew you were from Singapore or the UK as they offer O-Level and A-Levels! Anyways, your best bet is to get a TESU BACS degree as WGU would not work for you as you're international and not in the US. Further to that, it's a "true CS degree" vs a CS concentration at COSC. You pretty much grabbed that plan requirements and found out Study.com courses would hit the spot! From looking at your GPA, that's the only thing you need to worry about and I would suggest applying to multiple Masters after you're done with the TESU BACS.

Nailed it there.
From what i hear the GPAs don't transfer(as least in COSC)?

Option 1) Should i go with option 1, finish my business degree in COSC and take as many of those study.com courses as I can to make up credit. Maybe get a second degree in CS from TESU?
Option 2) Do credits generally transfer well from COSC to TESU for me to finish there (I only got 43 credits when i applied there for business)?

Also exploring using university of the people for that CS degree (though it's only nationally accredited, not regional)

Thank you!

If cs is your goal then why earn a business bachelors first. Go straight for the computer science Science Bachelors.

RE: Degree plan Charter Oak with goal of Georgia Tech OMSCS - bjcheung77 - 03-29-2020

StudentOLife, COSC letter grading system is only for external GPA (courses taken elsewhere), their internal GPA is different when you take courses with them. Actually, every college/university will have a different external GPA/internal GPA, courses you transfer over to TESU will NOT be looked at the same if you're doing the ACE credits from Sophia/SL/Study.com

From what I can gather, you're doing the same thing I did - the BSBA as a check the box degree and a BACS as the "real degree of choice". Haha! That's great, if you truly want a BSBA as a check the box degree, then do it... if you don't need the check box, then skip it and go directly to the BACS at TESU.

Because U of People doesn't have Regional Accreditation, I would skip it. I understand that you may be looking at saving some cash with these options by going to COSC and UofP, but you can get all the requirements missing with what you have and the Sophia.org special.

Can you do yourself a favor and copy/paste your TESU BSBA evaluation? I think I know exactly what you mean but want to see what the real evaluation looks like. You might want to do a pix or pdf but get rid of your personal details. My guess is, you're missing the general eds which means, you can get most if not all done FREE with Sophia!

Thanks heaps bjcheung77 for offering, here's the evaluation from TESU BSBA attached, too long for this one post.

Option 1)
My rational for finishing COSC's business bachelors is because then it meets the first requirement, for a bachelors.
Many people pivot after a bachelors into a different Masters, and with a few accredited CS credits - so maybe i can get them from a 3rd party(Sophia/Study/Saylor) while I do my COSC Business Bachelors?
Quote:Actually, every college/university will have a different external GPA/internal GPA, courses you transfer over to TESU will NOT be looked at the same if you're doing the ACE credits from Sophia/SL/Study.com
Does this mean, even if my 3rd party credits are accepted by COSC, it may not be beneficial for GT Masters application?

Did it work out for you, the check box degree, do you wish you'd done it direct to what you wanted in the first place?

Thanks again all for the kind responses. Now to figure out my strategic path..

@bjcheung77, not sure if the attachment worked, but here's the evaluation, thanks again!
