TEL Learning (RA) - General Education Credits - bjcheung77 - 10-24-2020
Hey, with ASU Earned Admissions no longer $99 per course, would TEL Learning be the cheapest option to get RA credits? I understand some community colleges may offer cheaper options but I'm looking for online only - not butt in seat options. Furthermore, I know that some colleges have cheap tuition for out of state if you're looking to take 6 credits in the summer... not looking for that either as I know several students who want to take courses "year round". From a cost perspective, these course are $10 cheaper than say New Mexico Junior College (NMJC), I usually recommend this school as a benchmark for "low cost RA" credits.

Since TEL Learning courses include EVERYTHING (no textbook or other supplies needed), I do think that they are cheaper than most any other RA option out there. Especially if you account for other fees that a CC might throw in.
Snow College is the absolute cheapest for Americans who want to go to COSC, though, if you can do all 60 credits in 1 semester. Even if you only manage 30 credits, it's still $58/credit compared to TEL Learning's $66.

I've been looking hard at Tel Learning. But it doesn't sound particularly quick to get through. For example, American Government has 56 low–stakes lesson knowledge–check quizzes, 13 module evidence assignments, 13 formative module quizzes, and 2 proctored exams.
Has anyone tried them out?
If not, maybe we'll be the guinea pigs. They do have a 1 credit College Readiness course.

For those who don't realize, you can preview the course(s) if you go to the homepage. The knowledge-check quizzes appear to be only 3 questions. They don't have the assignments or the main quizzes, though. And definitely not the exams.

Yeah, because TEL Learning only offers a select course list, I would recommend taking these courses if you need graded RA credits. For courses they don't offer, such as a Biology II or Chemistry II with lab, then the NMJC school for example, would be another option. I would recommend taking a "selective mix" of courses from TEL Learning and a community college such as NMJC to finish off any required RA graded credits.

We were planning on two more ASU courses for six RA credits, but I'm seriously considering Tel Learning for at least one course, possibly American Government. With EA, ASU is a safer investment, but not being self-paced is a big negative. While not exactly a bargain at $400, ASU courses are a reasonable option for RA credit. But at $170/course, it might be worth rolling the dice at Tel Learning.

My college kid is going to give TEL a try. Her school's winter intercession courses are only 4 weeks, which is a pretty fast pace. So TEL will be a better option, since it's self-paced and she can take the full 6-week winter break to complete it. She also doesn't have to buy a book. And if she needs a lab science, there are no extra fees - $67 for the course, no additional fees, which is great (it's an online lab).
The downside of NMJC is that you can't start whenever you want - it has to be during a normal term. They do have shorter 8-week half-semester courses, but they are still on a schedule. Also, it's pretty limited in what you can take there, it's definitely not a robust offering. They're $70/cr which is good, but most courses require a book, which can get pricy.

Looks like TEL Learning has recently added two more partners: Lane College and Oklahoma Christian University.
Not sure it'll make much difference to those of us on this board, but maybe it's a sign they'll also be adding more courses to their offerings as well.
