I realized many of these online 'certificates' are not really helpful for getting jobs. No one hires you based on how many of these virtual certificates you have. Their contents are much behind what you can get from Udemy videos for a lower price.

And the certificate. "Introduction to Mixing Paint" might not do anything for your employment prospects but an advanced certificate in something might be useful.

If you want to break into a new/different industry, one of the oft-cited struggles is the catch-22, where you can't get experience without already having experience.
A professional certificate or specialisation is a low-barrier approach that can provide an employer the inclination to give you an entry-level position in the industry, and from there you can move forward/up.
If you already have extensive relevant experience or university qualifications, a MOOC in the same industry isn't going to make much difference. But if you've been out of the field a while and need to quickly update your knowledge base, or want to move into a new industry without devoting the time and cost for 2-4 years in another university degree, a professional certificate or specialisation can open those doors.
And perhaps, for some of us, learning just for the sake of learning can be incredibly rewarding. Not everything has to have a dollar value attached to it to be worthwhile.
