Well, hello there! now that I think about it, I'll add a few more questions on this!
1. Where on earth does someone find HOW to schedule the exams? I'm a 'schedule online' with Prometric or Vue kind of person; so finding sites like collegeboard which say 'Contact the test site' makes me say 'wtf? isn't there any structure!' - So any feedback on how to actually go about scheduling, various links, sites, numbers or other information would be great!
2. How are the questions laid out and formatted? If I look at the flash cards, it gives me this impression questions may be 'fill in the blank' which I despise for a number of reasons. So any feedback if they're more of the multiple choice, fill in the blank, combination, etc!
3. If I am attending a school which will no longer accept any CLEP credit for me, because I'm "maxed out", can I take the exams in any event, and upon a transfer later (Big 3, EC) have that credit apply there? Advice!
And... anything else a CLEP/DSST Virgin ought to know.

Option A:
Do a search at college board (not sure how to post a link)
CLEP Test Center Search.
Many colleges and university's do CLEP and DSST tests. If you are not taking them at your school, look for one that is "open". They accept students not enrolled. Some of these schools likely have walk in testing, no appointment required.
Option B:
A google search of your local schools will likely result in several "university of blank student testing services...". Give them a call.
2. All the CLEP/DSST I have taken are multiple choice. They are not in the same format as IC. Some tests have an essay with them that you may or may not have to do. The College Board site has a list of all of those.
3. No idea. Sorry.

It all depends on the school. Some colleges in my area you have to call, some you can register online. If the site says to contact the school directly, odds are, you'll be registering over the phone. I preferred registering online, too, but the local community college only offered phone-in registration. But as a consolation, the test fee was only $15.00 instead of the $35.00+ many other schools charged.

In my experience, they are all multiple choice. The layout on Instantcert is to help you study and retain the information. If you go to College Board Tests and The DSST Program, you'll see examples of the question format on the actual test.

It all depends on the school/program you're interested in. You can shoot the admissions department an e-mail at each college and they can give you a better idea.

1. Each testing center has its own fees and policies. They can charge different amounts for "proctoring" the tests and depending on the school they let you register different ways. I take some tests at a State University that has online registration only but are stricter on times and a little bit of a drive. I take some at a closer community college that makes you fill out a form for each test and register at least a day in advance and only accepts payment by check but sometimes if I am there already and just drop by and want to take a test they will let me as long as they aren't busy. Just find a place that works for you.
2.Almost all no essay tests are multiple choice. Some of the math tests have a few questions where you have to type in a numerical answer. Those are the only types of questions I have run into.
3. You can always take CLEPs or DSSTs and not have scores sent anywhere. If you transfer to another school later either CLEP or DSST will send a transcript of your scores to that school (for a fee of course) with the tests you want to get credit for. This is also true even if you had scores sent to another school previously.
