Intro to Campus Life and College Terminology? - ctcarl - 04-17-2021
Disclaimer: I'm aware that this seems completely backwards.
I'd like to ask if anyone can suggest a very basic "Intro to Campus Life" or "Intro to College Terminology" online course.
I have been guiding a relative through the degree process. Thanks to Pierpont C&TC, Sophia, ASU EA, and several extraordinarily helpful DF members, it would appear that she will be graduating next month. Once she has the degree in hand, I plan to write a more detailed post sharing what we've learned about the process, and in particular, the remarkable BOG AAS program.
The problem is that we've staged a practice interview or two and discovered that she can't answer casual questions that an interviewer who may not be familiar with earning nontraditional degrees might ask. She never considered college until starting this adventure a little over a year ago, never set foot on a college campus, and did not spend time with friends or relatives who were current college students. So I'm trying to point her to a source for learning what any traditional college frosh knows by mid-September.

What kind of interview questions?
Sophia obviously has College Readiness and so does TEL Learning. But those are directed more to the academic side of things.

Same question as Rachel: What questions? List some of those and maybe we can help with answers of more benefit based on what this person did, instead of what could be the case for a traditional 18 year old in first semester?

and then there's blogs out there to share what is college like? here's one https://blog.prepscholar.com/college-life-what-is-it-like
some stuff will be campus specific to what a traditional student would know. and they'd learn in orientation week. (where's registrars office, advisor, etc...)

I can't imagine an interviewer discussing earning a nontrad degree unless you TELL them it's one. So my advice would be to not say anything about it. Unless they are going to actually order your transcript, and ask you about each individual course/course provider, I can't see how this will ever come up.

I appreciate the replies but I'm not looking for answers to specific questions. I can provide those.
I don't think I explained this very well. I'm looking for a course that will teach basic college terminology and concepts. Sort of as if you were familiar with life in the U.S., but lived in a remote, isolated place where you'd never had any exposure to college at all, and you were sent off to attend school in a more populated area, and didn't want to sound like an idiot for the first few weeks.

I think the blog article I linked above and the coursera and sophia courses offer insight into what it is like going to college. The blog article is written in mind for first time traditional age person going into the unknown.

Thanks! Sophia College Readiness is, as Rachel pointed out upthread, really more of an academic primer. But the blog and the Coursera offering look good, I'll send her the links.

examples might also help with the right resources you want.
I thought of a book someone gave us before family member went to college for first time. I'd put it more in category of "freshman college survival info" versus anything that you'd be asked in job interview or admissions interview.
That might be what you mean by "you'd never had any exposure to college at all..." and don't want to seem too out of place. The book we were gifted is on amazon for cheap on used. title "The Naked Roommate and 107 other issues you might run into in college"
I don't know if that kind of information is what you hope to share??
Most colleges have freshman orientation for a few days before classes begin to help students learn college terminology and such for that first year experience on campus. Oldest sibling in our family went to a brick and mortar school that had a semester long course for all incoming students that met once a week to help them learn about college life and issues and all of that. None of that is available online for others.
I have a feeling I'm not in the right ballpark for what you're hoping to find.
