Let's say I took those exact courses to get my 15 more UL credits. They're still saying I need 15 more credits in LL "arts and sciences", but I don't understand why they wouldn't consider my MUS 133 AUDIO RECORDING TECH (3 credits), HPE 102 HEALTH & WELLNESS (3 credits), AUT 131 AUTOMOTIVE HEATING & AC (3 credits), AUT 111 AUTOMOTIVE BRAKE SYS (3 credits), and one of the other 4 credit automotive courses. Surely, those lower-level courses would be considered as arts and sciences.

When I compared all my credits to this recent sample transfer guide (https://www.excelsior.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Study.com-to-Excelsior-C-BS-Liberal-Arts-Guide-03.21.pdf), I thought they'd accept at least 98 of my credits.

The automotive classes are not liberal arts. They would go into general electives. Liberal arts are natural sciences, math, humanities, etc. Even that music class may not be considered a liberal art because it's a tech class.

Even the BS has a minimum number of liberal arts credits that are required in each category of liberal arts.

1) The link you posted indicates exactly what Arts & Science courses are, so you should take some Lower Level requirements with Sophia.org and the UL with Study.com

2) You shouldn't think of trying to get as much credits into the degree from your previous credits, you should put that focus on which courses would get you to the finish line cheaper, easier, faster.

Actually, Excelsior takes Davar classes (NCCRS), they're slightly cheaper/easier/faster than Study.com, I would also look into those courses as well.  You need to email your academic advisor and ask them which courses can transfer over as Upper Level.

Also, did you sign up for the BA in Liberal Studies or the BS?  If you did the BA, switch to the BS.  That way they will take more "electives" than the BA (BA requires 90cr of Arts & Sciences and 30cr of Electives, and all UL must be in the A&S area; BS requires 60/60 for credits, and 21/9 for UL).

Arts & Sciences includes the Humanities, Social Sciences, Math & Natural Science.  You can get these credits from Study.com or Coopersmith.

Some examples of Arts & Sciences that will work:
BUS 318: Management Ethics (this will kill 2 birds - Ethics AND UL)
Choose 2 more:
BUS 313: Organizational Communication (UL Humanities)
SOC 305: Sociology of Work (UL SocSci)
PSY 311: Physiological Psychology (UL SocSci)
PSY 316: Advanced Social Psychology (UL SocSci)

You need 2 additional A&S courses - choose easy ones from Sophia - make sure they're not electives, Sophia's transfer page will show you what works where.

Did anything come in lower than a C?  If so, they won't take it. Otherwise, you're getting a BA, and you ran out of space for electives, so the switch to the BS should help. They would then bring in the remaining credits they didn't use, and you're done.

I looked at your original post, and in 2 places it said bachelor's degree in liberal arts.”  Nowhere does it say Bachelor of Science – so that’s why I asked.

Part of the problem is that you didn’t say WHERE the courses all came in (if you look at your Map, it should list “H” or “S” or “N” next to courses to show the category: H=Humanities; S-Social Sciences; N=Natural Sciences).

When I figured that out, I could see why they didn’t bring things in (generally there’s a pattern).  I’m going to guess that your Music courses are too “technical” to be considered Humanities, so those are going to go in the Free Electives area; COSC and TESU may do that as well.  100% certain your Auto courses are Free Electives anywhere. Health is considered a Free Elective at EC and TESU.

So I created a degree plan, and was able to match up to what you said they brought in (moved the Music courses to free electives, now I show that you have 86cr done, and 34cr left).

Here’s what I would do:
1)    Sign up for the Info Lit course
2)    Take 3 UL courses from Study.com from previous list
3)    If you took those in a single month, then you’re done; if not, take a LL course for the 2nd month since you’re paying for it anyway)
4)    Take 4 (or 5) LL A&S courses from Sophia
5)    Take 1 LL Free Elective from Sophia
6)    Sign up for Cornerstone
7)    Sign up for Capstone

There is no need to do everything in 1 term at EC that I know of, so there’s no rush to get all of your courses there done in a term – but if you need to for Pell Grant reasons, then it’s easy enough to just finish Sophia and Study.com first and then do the 3 courses in 1 term.

Also, if you’re getting a Pell Grant, you might benefit from doing 2 additional courses at EC instead – you would do 13cr there (Info Lit, Cornerstone, Capstone, and 2 other courses), and the additional amount would only be $550.

EC pricing
Tuition & fees for 7cr $5300 (bring in 113cr)
Tuition & fees for 13cr $5850 (bring in 107cr)

If all of these are RA, TESU might be more expensive but could be the easiest one to complete the requirements for. I think you have enough UL credit. I think almost everything else could come from Sophia. The exception would be American Government from InstantCert. That would certainly be the fastest way to completion but you'd have to pay about $7k in tuition & fees beyond that.

COSC would be cheapest of the big 3 but they (along with EC) require 30 credits of ULs. There are at least a relatively good number of UL credits at SDC to choose from when it comes to SDC. There are fewer ULs that count at SDC for EC but EC also accepts Coopersmith and TEEX.

The credits that were ignored are either from an accredited community college or public 4 year university.

I agree TESU may be the most expensive "Big 3" option, but they seem to be more flexible. According to this degree plan (https://www.tesu.edu/heavin/ba/liberal-studies), it seems they only require 15 total UL credits for a bachelor's degree in liberal studies. Please correct me if I'm wrong...

Yes, I earned a C or better on all of the listed courses.

It sounds way more complicated than it is. You'll get the hang of it. Once you get used to the ins and outs of how it all works you'll be fine. Make sure to pay attention to the number of UL (upper level - 300-400) courses you need in each category. EC will have that all listed out for you in your student account.

They actually only require 12 UL credits. The remaining 3 can come from the capstone.

RE: EC Wants Me To Do 34 Credits Despite Having 100+ Credits - bjcheung77 - 05-29-2021

Depending on the degree, I would lean towards TESU vs Excelsior. For the BSBA, you need 12 UL and the UL Capstone (15), for the BALS you need 15 UL and the UL Capstone - 18 UL credits total. That's one of a few reasons I would pick TESU over Excelsior, cost isn't one of them, the lesser work it requires with just 15/18 UL credits... Easier to transfer courses into their degrees and faster to finish with ACE & NCCRS credits. Sometimes it maybe better to just finish off the degree and work on "the raise" when you get into a higher position, the ROI/Value would be better than just trying to save cash but take longer and more energy to finish. The main reason Excelsior would be better is if you don't have any community college credits.

RE: EC Wants Me To Do 34 Credits Despite Having 100+ Credits - dfrecore - 05-29-2021

I would choose EC over TESU as EC's BSLA degree allows for 60cr of General Electives, while TESU only allows for 27cr. That means that if TESU were to bring in your credits the same way EC does (with the music courses as Free Electives, for certain the Auto courses will come in that way), you're at 46cr there, plus the 3 UL study.com courses & Dev Effective Teams puts you at 56cr - so TESU will throw out 29cr. Add to that the fact that your 3 UL courses will not count for anything - TESU doesn't include those as applicable to the UL needed in the AoS - and you're right back where you started.

You are MUCH better off sticking with EC or possibly switching to COSC (not sure of that).
________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I just plugged credits into TESU, and I show you needing 33cr in GE, 9cr UL AoS courses, and 15cr of LL AoS courses - so you need 60cr to finish at TESU. Add to that the fact that TESU is more expensive, and I can't see why anyone would switch at this point, even if they take your 10cr of music in GE.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

People are almost always better off at COSC or EC for a BALS/BSLS than at TESU, for cost alone, not to mention the flexibility at EC/COSC for this degree.

Update:

They miss the SOC 101 course by accident and concluded they'd accept 89 of my transfer credits. I saw my financial aid award there and wasn't impressed. Most of the financial aid would be in the form of student loans. I don't want to use any more student loans, especially not on a liberal arts degree.

So, I'm waiting to hear from NAU and will decide if I'll finish there or at UMPI. I want to extend my gratitude to everyone who tried to help me.

The financial aid package is based on the FAFSA, and that will apply to any school you go to.

I understand, but UMPI offered another federal financial aid grant (in addition to the Pell grant) than Excelsior. It's not a significant difference, but it's enough that pays for everything without using any federal student loans.
