A new applicant in need of advice! - Skylar0 - 03-10-2022 Hello! I am interested in the BLS with the Management Information Systems minor.I am coming in with around 48 credits, not sure how things will transfer over. I applied to UMPI yesterday, sent in transcripts, and talked with an enrollment counselor who told me she would be calling me Friday or Monday with an update. What I'm wondering is: Since I already sent in my transcripts and applied, is it too late for me to do courses through Sophia or knock my language requirement out? Or since I'm not starting until the first summer session in May will I still have time to do so? Does anyone have a course listing for the major or a transfer equivalency guide for it specifically? I've seen a few floating around but haven't found my major yet I've been reading about minors on the forum and I'm interested in seeing what I can pick up, but I assume that's something I won't see until I get to see until I have access to a portal or doing more than waiting on a phone call/email. I'm curious to see how my credits will transfer before I start doing Sophia courses, but is that something I can wait on? How long did transfer evaluations take you to receive? I know it's a loaded post, but I appreciate any advice. I'm kind of lingering waiting for someone from the school to reach out to me so I figured I would go ahead and try to see if I can get my hands on a course/transfer layout. If there's anything else that would be useful please let me know! ![]() EDIT: Here's what I have taken so far from past university/community college: Contemporary Green Living (3) Global Awareness Examining Human Condition (3) Theatre Appreciation (3) Art Appreciation (3) Personal Health/Wellness (3) College Transfer Success (1) Principles of Management (3) Java Programming (3) World Religions (3) American History I (3) Introduction to Computers (3) Music Appreciation (3) Writing and Inquiry (3) Introduction to Sociology (3) Chemistry I w/ Lab (4) The Criminal Justice System (3) Web Design and Development (3) Essentials of Cyber Security (3) Ethical Issues in Business (3) Total: 56 I also have the Google IT Support certificate but not sure if that is useful at all. After looking through other posts on the forum, I think I am wanting the BLS with the Management Information Systems minor instead. I will have to look into that more but since I applied before finding this forum I unfortunately may have to just transfer things after getting my evaluation. If any Sophia needs stick out please let me know :-) RE: A new applicant in need of advice! - ss20ts - 03-10-2022 We don't recommend applying until you've completed the 90 transfer credits. Once you apply and are accepted, you're enrolled. Once enrolled you need permission from your academic advisor to transfer in more classes. If you follow the forum instructions and post the courses you have, we can tell you what you need and where to get those credits from. As for the minors, you can view them all on the YourPace website. You will not be able to complete all of them because you need at 9 credits in a minor that aren't required for your major/core. I see where I went wrong. I updated the post with my courses I have already. I appreciate your response, thank you :-) RE: A new applicant in need of advice! - bjcheung77 - 03-10-2022 For UMPI, I would take everything you can first with Sophia.org since they're cheap, easy, fast... If you require more courses, extend that, and then work on other ACE recommended credits either from Sophia.org or InstantCertCredit, Study.com, etc. If you're going for UMPI, you need to make sure you have another science without a lab since you have one already and language course. So, skip StraighterLine altogether... Now to get you started: 1) Invest in a second monitor for easier multi-tasking and answer search. 2) Subscribe to Sophia.org and use 1 monitor for quiz/exams, 1 monitor for looking at pdf/texts. 3) Complete as many Sophia.org courses as you can that don't duplicate and applies to your degree requirements. 4) Complete the language requirement with Spanish I at InstantCertCredit, and if needed anything else from them. I suggest you create a spreadsheet of your degree requirements and use it as reference/tracking purposes. If you need to extend Sophia membership, it's just $79/month for 2 courses at a time, unlimited courses. Once done with the max of Sophia.org courses, you should update this thread with a new evaluation. Example set of courses from Sophia.org: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Sophia.org_Equivalency_List Link 1: UMPI - Completing a Degree Link 2: UMPI BLS Management Degree Plan Link 3: UMPI Sophia Transfer Equivalents RE: A new applicant in need of advice! - rachel83az - 03-10-2022 https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/UMPI_Sophia_Transfer_Equivalents I would suggest the following: Communication at Work (may be a GEC requirement, might be an elective, but it's pretty quick and easy) College Algebra Human Biology Anything else listed at https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Sophia.org_Equivalency_List that interests you and has 0-2 Touchstones. Skip Intro to Relational Databases, though. That one takes too long. In addition, you will want Spanish I from InstantCert. Or an ACTFL exam if you are fluent in another language. LOL Are you sure you want the BLS with MIS minor or do you want the BA Business Administration with Management & Leadership concentration? Either way you'll need to complete the GEC which is the general education requirements at UMPI. Here's the link to them. http://catalog.umpi.edu/content.php?catoid=4&navoid=153 Below is what I recommend you complete and where based on what is required for the GEC and what you have already completed. You earned a C- or above in all of these courses you posted, right? UMPI doesn't accept anything below a C-. You will have to complete a minimum of 30 credits at UMPI. You'll also need to complete UL courses outside of the minor at UMPI. This info will be on your degree audit that your academic advisor will email to you. Feel free to send me a pm with any UMPI questions you have. I completed the BLS with MIS minor so I'm really familiar with it. UMPI BLS Plan I. GEC – 40 credits 1A. Take at UMPI 1B. Take at UMPI 1C. InstantCert – American Government 1D. Take at UMPI 2A. Sophia – Introduction to Ethics 2B. Sociology will transfer 2C. Take at UMPI 2D. Take at UMPI 2E. Art Appreciation should transfer 3A. I haven't gotten an email from Jessica about it but on Friday I noticed my transfer eval was in MaineStreet so I wanted to update on what was accepted and where I'm standing as I have another ask for advice. I was told that I would be able to complete Sophia classes and transfer them in while I wait for my session to start. If I'm not looking at this wrong, it looks like if I complete everything I had planned on Sophia and InstantCert, I won't have 30 hours to complete at UMPI. In that case, should I take less Sophia courses (are there any that stand out as ones I absolutely should do at Sophia rather than UMPI)? Or maybe not do BUS 244 through SDC and save that $$? Or should I just truck through it all still and fill the remainder of my 30 hours with electives from UMPI? If I am looking at this all wrong please let me know. I asked Jessica of course but would love advice from people who have gone through this as well. I filled in the template that ss20ts gave me in a reply (thank you!) with what was accepted in my eval: UMPI BLS Plan 1A. Complete (Transferred in ENG 101) 1B. Take at UMPI (ENG 121) 1C. InstantCert – American Government 1D. Complete (ENG 101) 2A. Sophia – Introduction to Ethics 2B. Complete (SOC 100) 2C. Take at UMPI (ENG 121) 2D. Take at UMPI (Art Course) 2E. Complete (ART 107) 3A. YourPace Orientation (I did transfer in FYS 100, don't think that matters in this case) 4B. Take at UMPI (ENG 121) 4C. Sophia – Introduction to Ethics 5A. Complete (SOC 100) 5B. Complete (HTY 161) 5C. InstantCert – Spanish 1 5D. Sophia – Ancient Greek Philosophers 5E. InstantCert – American Government Management Information Systems Minor BUS141 Sophia - Project Management BUS200 Take at UMPI BUS244 Study.com - Business 303 Management Information Systems BUS245 Take at UMPI BUS345 Take at UMPI BUS440 Take at UMPI RE: A new applicant in need of advice! - ss20ts - 03-27-2022 You HAVE to complete a MINIMUM of 30 credits at UMPI. There is no way around this as it is a requirement of the university. The BLS has 62 credits in electives with the majority of them being UL credits which need to be completed at UMPI. You may not have a meeting with Jessica until you're ready to register for classes which takes place later in the session. |
