BA Biz HR and maybe…psych? Planning help - Slammyelis - 05-11-2022

Hey all!

I live in now, and am a citizen in, Canada, but all of my relevant Ed history is from the US. From my understanding, I need to have had a grade of C to transfer? Only (!) the courses in which I achieved C or better are below. I also can add a couple of D graded ones, if those are transferable…

I am 40…didn’t finish my degree at UGA because of trauma I won’t name, financial hardship, and undiagnosed ADHD.

Degree wanted: I really want virtually any baccalaureate degree, ideally in a double major. Very interested in business (esp mgmt and/or HR concentrations if double majors aren’t possible) and IT mgmt or psych. I have 20 years experience in various customer-facing as well as people management/HR roles in retail, entrepreneurship (owned my own biz for 11y), healthcare and banking. I am currently working in SaaS (software as a service). Open to all suggestions meeting my top requirements the most.

Future: my career goals are to reach executive level in a tech company, Chief Customer Officer or HR management/people ops equivalent. Alternatively, bc I’m new to saas, I may end up wanting to pursue a counseling masters at some point…

Here’s where I’m at with credits thus far:

Georgia - HS Diploma, 1999

Waycross college (now south GA state college), completed 1998/1999 as dual enrolment:
Intro sociology - 3
American govt - 3
Spanish I - 3
Engl 1101 - 3
Engl 1102 - 3

UGA, 1999-2000:
Intro to computing (we learned C++) - 3
Appreciation of dramatic art - 3
Analytical geometry & calc w/ diff calc lab - 4 (*looks like I did some kind of test to qualify for calc, there is something on my transcript about math modeling and something else…I have zero recollection!)
Linguistics study of language - 3
Comm human soc (speech comm 1010) - 3
Logic & critical thinking - 3

Budget: slimmmmmm…really as inexpensive and quick as possible. If I had to choose, inexpensive is more important than time. I also have to consider exchange rate or international fees being a Canadian student. If I have to pick a number, under 6k CAD/4500 USD!

Commitment level: I can commit a lot (25-30h/wk, sometimes more!) until august 1. I’d love to knock out a bunch during this time. After that prob 10h/wk average because I’ll be working full time at a startup. I also have a side hustle, husband, and two teenagers.

Relevant info: I’m both a good writer and good at tests, so fast and cheap are still the priorities. 100% stoked about testing out but note I live nowhere near a clep testing centre!

Sincerely hope I didn’t miss anything! I have seen to start with Sophia then move to study.com and get as much as possible before applying…I think? Anyway, open to alllllll the suggestions, plans, ideas etc!

Very excited to be on this road again after so many years! ADHD diagnosis, treatment and meds are gonna support me in fulfilling this lifelong dream…and maybe with a double major or multiple degrees\ certificates!!!

Pls lemme know if I missed anything!!

Thanks so much in advance.

The UMPI Bachelor of Arts Business Admin with Project Management concentration seems like the best fit for you:

https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/UMPI_BABA_Project_Management_Degree_Plan

https://online.umpi.edu/programs/

I believe it is possible to take all Study.com courses to do the UMPI psychology minor. You would need permission from UMPI first before starting this.
http://catalog.umpi.edu/content.php?catoid=4&navoid=155
http://catalog.umpi.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=4&poid=418&returnto=155

You can also double major in any of the regular yourpace degrees.

UMPI can be done in 1 or 2 sessions, which would be $1400 or $2800. A double major will likely add another session.

SDC has a discount code that will reduce the cost to $140 for the first 3 months. Sophia is best to start with @ $99 per month.

Once you figure out what college you want and the degree you want. The next step would be to make a spreadsheet of your degree plan. After that, you can start to take the courses.

I agree that UMPI seems like a good fit, possibly the best fit. But if you want a literal psych degree (and not just a psych minor), you'd have to go to TESU. It would cost more, but you'd be able to get a BA Psych and a BSBA in HR/Org. Management if you planned everything right. You can get an idea of requirements here. https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Sample_TESU_General_Education_Requirements_Roadmap I think you could even double major the BSBA, if you really wanted: HR/Org. Management + Computer Information Systems.

For people who have minor issues with studying (like me, I have mild cases of ADHD, dyslexia, etc), I would not rush things... Take it step by step, I suggest getting the hang of "online" education with Sophia.org courses first.  You should decide on the degree/school of choice while you take courses towards either Excelsior, TESU or UMPI.

So, it's best to know you what your preferences are (must it be Business, Psych or are you OK with a BAS or BLS), I highly recommend getting a Pierpont BOG AAS and then ladder that to UMPI BAS with a couple of minors in Management, Project Management or MIS, see this post and post#29 in this thread: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-300-400-level-deadline-for-enrollment-is-May-3?pid=365771#pid365771

Note: You have roughly 30 RA credits, any of the Big 3 or Competency Based Education providers such as UMPI/WGU would work for you.  Don't dwell on "transferring" the max courses, you should look at which option would allow you to "finish" cheap, easy, fast as it would provide you the most ROI/Value when you commence.

Thank you for your reply! Just out of curiosity, why did you suggest the project management vs leadership management track? The tech component?

Yes for the tech component.

They call it "Project Management" but it actually follows exactly the MIS minor.

Hmmm. The HR/CIS is interesting! Thanks.

Thank you for the reply! I think yes, I want business for sure. Low hanging fruit, so to speak, and applicable no matter what direction I end up going in the future.

I’m super familiar with online courses — I’ve completed literally dozens in the last 5 years, sadly none of them were for credit! I had no clue that I could’ve been accruing credit courses all this time. Oh well! Most recently I’ve done a customer success manager certification, agile leadership specialization and positive psychology foundations specialization…just in the last 7 weeks. ?

As for the pierpont, I had seen that but I think I need to be a US resident. My in laws still live there…prob sure I’d need more than just their address, though. Edit: I saw that here and I am not a US citizen and am no longer a green card holder. https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Pierpont_C%26TC

Great, let us know which school and degree(s) you want to go for and we can help you from there.  Smile

At TESU, they will take D grades as long as it's not in the AoS or English Comp. They are also the ones with the majors you're looking for - BSBA in HR, CIS, Entrepreneurship. They also have a Psych major. But really, I don't think the Psych major will do much for you.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Honestly, if you're looking at the best price, UMPI is your best bet. If you are looking to get into upper management, then you're probably looking at an MBA at some point in time, in which case the BABA is a better option than the BLS.

You have a lot of the GEC done there, so you're looking at Sophia and Study.com for a few courses:

Sophia
Environmental Science
Intro to Ethics
US History I or II
Macroeconomics
Microeconomics
Intro to Business
Intro to Accounting
The Essentials of Managing Conflict (1cr)

Study.com
BIO 101L: Intro to Biology w/Lab
COM 120: Presentation Skills in the Workplace

At this point you can decide if you want to take a few more Study.com courses to get some off the Core major courses in (or even the concentration courses), or if you want to jump into UMPI. Just depends, because everything remaining is UL at Study.com, so will require 1-3 assignments per course, which can be a lot of work.

This is super helpful and timely. I was just re-evaluating my goals and what's available based on what I'm reading on this forum. I am leaning towards where you got to -- the business degree in order to be able to choose to pursue an MBA as I edge my way into upper management. If executive is where I'd wanna end up...the MBA is a no brainer! (Also the D grades at TESU thing is interesting but gets me really nowhere I'd need to be anyway, and it's maybe 6 credits so not worth TESU just for that.)

And for an MBA, I'd need the BABA vs the BLS - Mgmt because the BA is IN business with a major in management whereas the BLS is IN liberal studies with management concentration, right? (Forgive me; when I went to school in the States I never once looked into liberal studies degrees or maybe even heard of them (not sure my school/s had them?) -- I was supposed to go into medicine. HA!) Also I just went to look at the courses required and I think that validates this statement. Smile

Working on my spreadsheet for UMPI!! To be continued...
