Chemistry CLEP and GEC lab requirement? - terribleperson - 06-23-2022

I understand from discussion on this board and the General Education page on their website that UMPI's general education curriculum requires a biology course (Learning Objective 3c), a physical or environmental science course (Learning Objective 3d), and a science with a lab (I've been assuming this is Learning Objective 3e) which may be fulfilled by one of your other science courses. I noticed while looking at their PDF of accepted CLEP tests and their course equivalencies that the CLEP Chemistry exam is counted as 8 credits and is equivalent to CHY 111 and CHY 122, both of which fulfill Learning Objective 3e.

Does this get you through the lab science requirement, or is there a separate explicit requirement for a science course with a lab? Is the explicit lab science requirement a YourPace-specific GE requirement?

You would need to contact YourPace and check with them about the lab science and if this CLEP meets the GEC requirements. There is this document that's on the UMPI website from 2017. There's no way to know if this is current or accurate for YourPace. It says CBE on it, but I would check with YourPace admissions or an academic advisor before taking the exam just to confirm it will be applicable to the GEC lab science requirement.

Here's a simpler explanation for what they're looking for: you need a Biological Science course (not necessarily Biology itself) and a Physical Science course.  One of the two must have a lab component.

Some schools count the CLEP as a lab science, but many don't.  Please let us know what they say about the CLEP when you contact them and ask.

@OP, Some colleges will take AP courses and apply that as a college credit course with lab, this is because the course is taught at a high school and labs are taken during the course. CLEP would be less so as there are no physical labs students go through, but still, some may allow this. I looked at that as well but never got the chance to ask academic advising or the registrar if they would accept the CLEP as a course with lab credit. It's great you revisited this option, I recommend emailing your academic advisor to verify.

There's no date on this document. The one I shared had a date. I would always recommend contacting UMPI to confirm CLEP exams since they're not in the transfer database for some reason especially with regards to including a lab. Better to be safe than sorry.

Yours also does not have a date on the actual document, which I would prefer.  But I agree that you must talk to the school when there's no date, or it's been longer than a year or two; and usually some clarification is needed.

Mine was from 2017 and I noted as such. The date was in the file name. The file came from the 2017 folder of documents they store on their website. Since CLEP isn't in the transfer database there's no way to confirm that what's in these docs is current or which version of the exam was taken. I know certain subjects like English have multiple exams available. You also want to find out what score you need for the exam to transfer.

Yes, I know you noted it - and I was saying that I prefer that a school/company actually notes the date of the document ON the actual document (Effective 1/1/2017 at the top of the document is much more helpful than having it on the file name).  I was also agreeing with you that since it's far from current at this point, that it behooves a student to actually contact the school for the info.

I'm not enrolled and won't be applying until next year, so I thought the best thing to do was ask here considering many people here have said phone admissions isn't a reliable source of information. That said, I see now that the University of Maine System website has email contacts listed for admissions and transfer information for UMPI. I'll post again if I get a response from someone.
