Calc based Physics needed - Hometeacher628 - 09-12-2022
Ok I am looking for a Calc based Physics class for DD already a full time student. Fifty % of her past Physics classmates didn’t pass, including her, and she needs Calc based Physics 1&2 for her ROTC Scholarship requirements. It would be nice if it were asynchronous, and offered from a school that also has an ROTC unit offered at the school. She almost doesn’t have time to fit it into her Spring schedule, and this time around the cost is on her. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I think in this case there might be a hidden problem. It's easy enough to find an online Physics course. I'm pretty sure she could do it at UMass, for example. I think the real problem is, how much support does she need from the Instructor? Online courses are not known for being especially supportive. Since she's already demonstrated that this is a difficult area for her, it might not be prudent to simply throw her into an online course where she may be required to largely teach the material to herself. Hmm, interesting, which school is this? I wonder, wouldn't the Algebra based Physics I & II classes duplicate the Calculus based Physics I and II classes?

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll check it out. She had 7 Science courses in high school, 2 were college level Physics, as well as made it through college Calc 3. So tell me where the problem was? I attribute the issue that 40-60 problems per unit for homework, with no credit given, then only 3 tests, and once you get a 30 on one test, there is no chance to recover. She did tons of the problems, just to figure out how to do them, but the tests did not follow the homework as a way to study. It was very disjointed. She thinks since she did so much of the homework already, retaking the class at her school again will give her a chance to replace the grade and increase her GPA. Transfer credit doesn’t factor into the schools GPA. But I just doubt she has time next semester with the class load, and I’m looking for a plan B that she should entertain.

ROTC Scholarship requires Calc 1&2, and Calc based Physics 1&2. She needs the last 2 classes before graduation. She just has such a tight schedule I really fear to leave those two classes unfinished before too long.

Doane University, 8-weeks long courses, $390/cr

I'm thinking she could do one course this summer, and then finish the summer after so that it wouldn't interfere with her regular schoolwork.
National University, 4-week long courses, $370/quarter-credit, courses are 4.5qc = 3cr semester-based - this might be an issue with her school, not being the normal 4cr (3cr lecture + 1cr lab). The good thing is the 4-week long nature - take 1 over Christmas break, and the other over the summer.
Merced College (a CA CC) - semester-long courses, $325/cr for non-residents, they have calculus-based Physics I, II & III, 4cr each with online lectures and online labs.
Straighterline does not have Physics II, and nowhere on their syllabus does it say calculus-based, so unless you can get that straightened out, I wouldn't recommend it.
