What if my Degree contains too many Transfered Credits from Sophia etc.? - ecdw94 - 03-13-2023
Hello,
Does it make a difference for the future school?
Imagine, 90 of your credits were transfered from other places like study.com or sophia. While you have only finished 30 of credits as in residency. (Bachelor's degree).
Would that make a difference (make it more difficult), to be accepted to a Master's program at a different University ? Since many Universities require you to have a Bachelor's degree as a prerequisite?
Two more questions:
If you want to attend a Computer Science Master's degree, but you have your Bachelor's degree from a different field and it is not even a 3-4 years degree but rather a 12 Month degree?
I may be at a totally wrong place to ask that, but does anyone know how a 12 Months BABA Degree from UMPI is recognized in Canada? It seems like I can not choose 12 Months in (https://applications.wes.org/ca/degree-equivalency-tool/poe.asp ) the Degree Equivalency Tool. Since the lowest duration for a Bachelor's degree that you can chose is only 3 years long? Specifically it's about recognition in Canada.
And will UMPI ever offer affordable Master's degree programs?

I would think it's a 4 year degree if it takes you 20 years to finish or 12 months. It's 4 years of college credit. That's what is logical to me.

Only a handful of schools care about ACE vs. residency credits. As long as you have at least 30 RA credits on your transcript, you should be good for most of the Master's degrees that you'd care to apply to.
If you want a CS Master's degree, you're going to want to check out its prerequisites and be sure that you have those on your transcript. For instance, UMPI only requires Algebra and their Business Math class for a BABA. But most CS Master's programs want to see Calculus and/or Discrete Math. Fill up your electives with CS Master's prereqs instead of random "easy" classes.
Finally, a BABA from UMPI is absolutely not a 12 month degree. It is not a 4-month degree or a 6-month degree nor even a 3-year degree. It is a real 4-year degree, accelerated. End of story. That you can finish it in just a few months has no bearing on the type of degree it is.

Ooh, its about the 120 Credits needed, right? I just saw the amount of credits. Its the same amount that any other 4 year degree requires. So I guess, it's about that. Thanks

As to the second point, does it matter if I transfered Calculus and Discrete Math from Sophia to UMPI for the BABA degree? Or it is not possible /or i need to take them at UMPI directly as electives?
As to the latest answer, yep and thank you, its a 120 credits degree which would theoretically mean that it's simply a 4-year degree. I was planning to do that in 2 semesters by transfering most of the stuff from Sophia and co. As people have said, it is not realistic to graduate in 1 semester. Would you comment on that?

Most students here are able to complete a degree in 2-3 sessions. 2 sessions = 1 semester. So, it is definitely possible to graduate in a semester. Some do need two.
As for things like Calculus & Discrete Math, it'll depend on the Master's program. Some (like Georgia Tech) seem to be quite friendly to ACE classes as prerequisites. Others want them to be from another college or university. I would strongly suggest contacting the programs in question to ask about prerequsites. If you need RA Calculus, for instance, you can take Arizona State University's Universal Learner Calculus for $425. That's probably the cheapest way to get an RA Calculus class, unless you have a very cheap community college nearby. Not everyone does. Discrete Math would be a bit trickier/more expensive if the Master's program wants RA credit.
Thankfully, Master's programs are usually more responsive than undergrad ones - even at the same school. If you email the ones you're interested in right now, you'll probably hear back from at least some of them before the end of the week.

There's two issues at work here. One is meeting the requirements for the master's program. You should have no problem with that, although if they have specific courses that are prerequisites, they may insist that those courses are RA credits. Therefore if you have a particular grad program in mind, it would pay to nail down details like that before getting too far into your bachelor's.
The second issue is how competitive the program is. You can meet all of the requirements, but lose out to a student with a better looking application. It's really hard to quantify exactly what goes into those decisions. Your grad school application is a package, your transcript and GPA are only one factor. Work experience, recommendations, essays, etc... all play a part. If you're strong in those other areas, your transcript may not matter very much.
If you're flexible about where you go for grad school, then in general, you should have no problem.

It may not be the best strategy if you plan on applying to some type of ultra-competitive grad school but if your goal is to simply get into some school. somewhere then you should be ok.

I don't think most schools will worry too much that you have a lot of ACE credits. However, I will note that they may care about the grades you got on those credits. One of the grad schools I applied to (the one I ended up choosing) required I send graded transcripts from Study.com so they could calculate my overall GPA, and I had 84 graded college credits on my transcript. So, if you want to go to grad school, you may want to try to do more than a minimal pass on Study.com and Sophia credits. That said, I applied to three state schools and only one of those three made that request.

Many of us on here already have completed a master's degree after earning a bachelor's degree with ACE credits. I start my second master's in May. There are also people who have earned doctorates after completing a bachelor's degree with ACE credits.

I will say that GPA probably matters more than ACE credits - so if you practically flunked out of college 20 years ago (like I did), and then come back and do 30cr at UMPI, your GPA may still not be great, and you might want to do more than the minimum number of credits there to up your GPA.
Also, the vast majority of schools will require a bachelor's degree to get into a master's program. There are VERY few that do not. Like, 3 or 4 schools.
UMPI does have an affordable Master's degree - the MA in Organizational Leadership. It's $2,000 per 8wk term.

Sophia doesn't have Discrete Math (although SDC does). But I don't think YourPace at UMPI offers those courses (their Computer Science degree is only offered on-campus, and none of their online degrees requires math at that level, so my guess is you can't take them at UMPI).
The majority of students on this forum that do YourPace are reporting that they graduate in 2 terms (16 weeks); one has done it in 1 term, and a few have done 3 terms (multiple majors or minors or concentrations, or for financial aid reasons).
