Questions for UMPI BA Accounting - cizzie - 05-10-2023

Hey all I have a ton of credits on my credly account to include an AAS in accounting, I was originally going toward CS but decided to shift to Accounting as I find it much more interesting. I have not completed any prior degree but I have a decent amount of credits I was wondering in reference to This degree plan on the wiki as I have a lot of semi-unrelated credits and electives including Coursera certs. Would these count toward the extra 30 Cr needed to sit for the CPA. Basically, I am asking does the additional 30cr hours toward the 150cr have to actually be applied to a major or minor or can they just be sitting on the transcript? I already verified that I will meet the ACC-specific and gen BUS cr requirements to sit. Another question i have is if Calc 1 on Sophia will fulfil the bus math requirement. Also will Sophia Critical thinking class cover the 2D requirement on the degree plan?

What state are you in? Every state has different CPA requirements.

Think of it this way: you have to have 150cr total, and a certain number have to be business-related, and a certain number have to be accounting courses. As long as you meet those requirements, it doesn't matter what the 150cr consist of.

NY is a PITA compared to many other states.

There is no mention of ACE credits on anything I find for the state so this is something you will have to look into. The 30 additional credits aren't just any credits.

CLEP exams are an option.

Honestly after reviewing this, it looks like I need to take most of the classes via UMPI and should avoid Alt credit if I want to sit for the exam in NY, maybe I should shoot for a license in another state like NJ. I believe NY has reciprocity after a set amount of time w/ nj, and NJ also allows work time in NY to count toward licensure as well which is a win-win since there is no residency requirement and the CPA doesn't have to be NJ licensed.

Side Note:
I do want to credit and thank everyone for their input so far, I really appreciate the input and help.

Alt credit is tough for CPA licensing in some states. A BA in Accounting with taking the accounting courses and most business courses at UMPI is what others have done in the past. You'll have to wait at least 4 years to get your NY license. Do you want to wait that long?

Do you live close enough to Jersey so you can work there?

Yes, I currently live with my parents & Jersey is about a 1-2hr trip. I am right outside NYC(East) and it's super expensive here, so I probably won't even come back to NY if the Salary in Jersey is right lol. Honestly willing to just follow my career to wherever it takes me, and this could save me a heap of time and money going the alt credit route, I also have family there.

On a side note for anyone in the future reading it, if you use alt credit it must be on a college transcript read this via a Reddit source, so not sure how true that is or not.

@OP, you have an associates, you're going for the BA Accounting, you need to make sure those accounting credits are RA. That means, you can transfer in the rest and complete the major at UMPI. If you need additional credits and you want them to be RA, you can add another minor, such as MIS or Management, Project Management or something that you're interested in. Get to the 150 credits with both BA Accounting and what you currently have on the table, plus anything else that interest you...
