Political Science Courses - International Relations and Modern Conflicts? - Tswede - 07-24-2023
I have taken EU Governments, Vietnam War, Arab-Israeli for UL electives.
Of the other UL Poli Sci courses, were there any of those that were especially challenging or problematic? I am looking for reasonably short courses, but I prefer things covering the World Wars and the Cold War. I've studied Military History after 13 years in the military and grew up taking history classes in my home country of Sweden and in summer programs in my mother's home land of Germany. Modern Political Thought, Marxism, Constitutional Law, International Relations & Modern Conflicts most interest me, of the courses I have left. Modern China and Native American history would be much more of a new subject area and I am unsure my interests will be piqued.
I've seen people say that International Relations & Modern Conflicts is very long. However, it seems to cover my favorite topics so I am wondering if that part matters in terms of how long it takes?
I am used to writing essays and that comes easy to me. I have done powerpoints for conference presentations, but doing one for a social science class seems somehow harder. Maybe it isn't, but I am used to presenting on technical topics so it's just a shift.
I am completing 6 courses this session and more than halfway through that to complete my degree this term. I have a self-imposed deadline of August 11 due to some travel I have after that. However, I can complete courses quickly if the professor affirms milestones quickly, which is why I appreciate Dr Zaborney's classes.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

I’ve taken Marxism, Constitutional Law, and Arab/Israeli conflict so far this term all from Dr Z. I love his format and quick grading. I’m currently taking modern political thought and it is like the other 3 that I’ve taken. 2-3 milestones and a 1,500 word final. My plan is to take 2 more Pol classes to get the Political Science minor. I hope he’s the professor of them as well. Was never my goal but with his quick grading and the fact that I’m a huge history nerd why not.

Same. His quick grading makes these classes much smoother than some of the other ones I have taken. I am shooting for a Poli Sci minor, if possible. I added Marxism today and knocked out the milestones tonight.

No, your enjoyment of the subject will not affect the length; it'll just make wading through it more enjoyable. It's been more than a year since I took the course, but, as a comparison, each of the three (or four, don't quite remember) subjects covered had more content than the entirety of Arab-Israeli Conflict. It's a well-structured class, and is interesting, but it's just flat-out long and content-heavy. It is, if memory serves, longer than Arab-Israeli Conflict, Marxism, and Constitutional Law combined. Doesn't mean you shouldn't take it; I'm glad I did. But if I were looking for fast classes, I'd definitely do Marxism and/or Con Law first.

International Relations and Modern Conflicts is a great course covering a lot of interesting material. But it is a marathon, not a sprint, compared to other Poly Sci courses. Like others have said Marxism or Arab-Israeli Conflict are far shorter courses. If I remember right, there are a litany of 500 word milestones, plus a long power point for the final. Yes it’s interesting material, but it’s LONG.
