I'm torn between going to work or doing a PhD? - maggie.888 - 06-06-2024

I'm torn between going to work or doing a PhD? I started my own business, and I paid for all the academic experience up there.
My age is 27.

I've never been praised, but I tell myself I'm good.

Where are you considering doing a PhD? The ENEB may be problematic for admission into a doctoral program in some countries.

@maggie.888, Welcome to the board, that's too compact and concise intro post, it doesn't provide enough information that is asked for in the addendum and template within the sticky thread above your post. By providing an overall picture of your scenario, we can further assist you better with the extra details, please reply back and complete the addendum and template here: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-New-to-DegreeForum-How-this-Area-works

My initial reaction is that if you don't know, for sure, that you want/need a PhD, then you should work until you are sure. It requires a lot of passion and commitment, too much for someone who isn't 100% sure.

My initial reaction is that it is a fake post from a new account and at some point in the future, the account will be used to post some spam/spam links.

I think you need to stop thinking of a PhD as a next step and actually understand what a PhD is. It's literally a massive commitment where YOU have to create original research and become a subject matter expert in a niche field, not just regurgitating info like in a BA.

It depends. If you know you will attempt a Ph.D. either now or in the future, then I would say do it now. Later, with family commitments it will become much more difficult. As others have said, it's a massive commitment, and it's better not to have distractions. However, if you feel that Ph.D. is something you always dreamed to have and more of a "nice-to-have" thing, I would say work first. Starting your own business is another a hundred hour a week commitment, so either way you're going to learn a ton.

That's correct, with so little info to go by, "I have a business, I want PhD", it's really going to depend on so many various factors... As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I will still recommend you to fill us in with the addendum and template, so we have a picture of your scenario and your reasons for the PhD. If you are still unsure, your best bet is to create a better balance trifecta of certs, degree, experience, in the field or fields you want to get into... Having a PhD doesn't do you any good if you're going in a completely different direction - an example: You're going for a PhD in Business or Education Technology and Research, yet you want to be an IT consultant or expert...
