Transfer credits came in as general electives - achraf15 - 06-11-2024

Hello everyone,

I am scheduled to start in the summer 2 session at UMPI for BA Accounting. I received my transfer credit report today, and all my 54 credits from a Japanese university came in as general electives.

I sent an email to umpi-transfercredit@maine.edu to ask if any of these credits could be used to fulfill GEC requirements.
I was hoping at least classes like Physics I and II, Biology I and II, Chinese I and II, Linear Algebra I and II could be used to fulfill some requirements but I got nothing.

I am waiting to hear back from them, what are my chances they would actually change their evaluation? Should I just give up and do the Sophia classes that cover them. I paid for 1 month sophia subscription and currently working to knock out as many classes as I can.

I'd wait for a reply before doing Sophia classes. It's very possible that your classes can and will be applied to some of the GEC requirements. Give them a week or so to get back to you and then contact them again, if need be.

Basically, I would wait as well, but if you can send us a PDF or screenshot of the academic evaluation, we'll most likely know what's going on... The academic evaluation I am referring to is the one your academic advisor sends you, it should have in yellow highlights the missing credits in your degree plan and the number of credits remaining in the entire degree.

You posted on Discord, right? On there you were told you'd have to wait and see what is done with the credits for your transfer credit evaluation. You should be able to login to MaineStreet and see what the courses were applied to. Often times, foreign credits aren't very useful because they're not the same courses as those taught in the US. The good news is that your general electives are done.

I would like to know how many courses I can complete at UMPI. I am considering enrolling to earn some accounting credits and plan to complete 6 accounting courses. Is it possible to complete them in one term? Additionally, how many papers or assignments are required for each course? How many pages do you need write for each paper?

@Imbanewbie, I'm not sure why you quoted the Original Poster... Are you asking them these questions? Or are you asking members who are reading this post or thread? The reason I am curious is... The OP hasn't started (just like myself, we're starting Summer Session 2 in two weeks), the answers are going to vary, but I highly doubt OP would have any of these answers. The best people to speak with or get answers from is to post this in the UMPI Course Review Thread.

So I talked to Barbara Lambert and she unfortunately told me that my credits were transferred in as general electives because they don't qualify for equivalencies as each course must have at least 3 credits for that, and my coursers from my previous university were 1 or 2 credit courses.
This means I only get 17 free elective credits that fill in the elective section.

Therefore I decided to do Sophia courses and transfer them to UMPI. I told my advisor I'm doing all the GEC on Sophia, and take the accounting classes on UMPI starting tomorrow.
I'm attaching the academic evaluation along with the degree plan I drafted. I originally intended to do some SDC courses but at this point I will just do them with UMPI.

No, don't do that, it may cost you an extra session for $1700 vs a few hundred for Sophia.org/Study.com... Just complete the only required classes for residency, you can do the Sophia.org and Study.com classes afterwards for transfer. UMPI allows you to continuously transfer your credits into the degree program (with permission from the assigned advisor and as long as the course can transfer from an alternative source), just like COSC, Excelsior, TESU, etc.

Okay, I will ask my advisor if they can let me do the classes that can't be transferred in from Sophia and SDC.
