What CLEP Courses? - mpathy - 09-18-2024

Hey everyone,

I'm a newbie to degreeforum (literally signed up 10 minutes ago), and I was wondering how do you go about choosing the right CLEP exams. I am currently in the process of enrolling into a community college in the winter and their policy states that CLEP credits is accepted in general studies degrees. It also states that a maximum of 30 CLEP credits can be applied toward electives. Note, I intend on pursuing a AA in business (90 credits) and then transferring to a 4-year.

Here is a pdf list of courses under this degree (https://www.tacomacc.edu/_attachments/academics-programs/Approved-Distribution-List-23-24.pdf), but I'm lost on how many and which courses I need to take.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

For 30 credit, it sounds like you need to take 10 CLEPs. I don't think anybody here has a list of CLEPs that have successfully transferred to that particular community college, so directly asking is going to be your best bet.

If I were you, I would go through the list of CLEPs on the CLEP or Modern States website, find the ones that you think meet the general education requirements of your AA, and then ask your community college if they will transfer the way you think.

Modern States is how you can get to take CLEP exams for Free - https://modernstates.org/

Only that school can tell you which CLEP exams will transfer and how. I say how because for the Comp exam for example, there is an option to take it with or without the written portion. Some schools will require the written portion, so do not. Also, each school can set their required score to receive credit. The typical passing score for a CLEP exam is 50, but your school may require a score of 60 in Intro to Psych and a 65 in College Mathematics. I will link the page that discusses this at one of the community colleges that I know uses their own requirements for scores.

another thing to think about: If you plan to transfer to a 4 year college, you will need to know how that college/university will accept the CLEP exams you take.
