i just want a BS or BA - kokes - 05-22-2025

Your Location: Kansas, USA
Your Age: 40
What kind of degree do you want?: Flexible – likely Liberal Studies, Business, or Tech (I’m strong with computers, product thinking, and testing)
Current Regional Accredited Credits:
Red Rocks Community College – Total Credits: 27
  • CIS 115: Intro to Computer Info Systems – 4 cr, B
  • CIS 116: Logic and Program Design – 3 cr, A
  • CSC 160: Computer Science I (C++) – 5 cr, D - i know this won't transfer
  • MTD 174: Game Design I – 3 cr, A
  • ACC 101: Fundamentals of Accounting – 3 cr, A
  • ACC 115: Payroll Accounting – 3 cr, C
  • ACC 175: Sales Tax – 1 cr, B
  • BTE 100: Keyboarding – 1 cr, C
  • BTE 108: Ten-Key by Touch – 1 cr, B
  • BUS 115: Intro to Business – 3 cr, A
ASU UL (Universal Learner):
  • CSE 101: Intro to Programming – 3 cr, pass
Current ACE, CLEP, or NCCRS Credits: None yet (looking to begin Sophia, Study.com, maybe Saylor)
Any certifications or military experience? No military; completed CSPO and BBST Foundations (non-credit)
Budget: Ideally under $30K total; will spend more if needed for speed or simplicity
Commitments: Full-time job + family, but flexible
Dedicated time to study: Evenings and weekends (~30–40 hrs/week possible)
Timeline: Would love to finish in under 12 months if possible
Tuition assistance/reimbursement: None currently

My Goals:
  • Earn a regionally accredited bachelor’s degree online as fast and affordably as possible
  • Maximize use of existing college credit
  • Utilize Sophia, Study.com, CLEP, etc. for most remaining credit
  • Prefer TESU (BALS?) or UMPI (BAS?), but open to suggestions if there's a faster/better fit

My Questions:
  1. Based on my credits, would TESU BALS or UMPI BAS/BA be faster or more cost-effective?
  2. Should I get started with Sophia or Study.com now, or wait until a degree plan is mapped out?

My current (terrible) plan is to stock up on CLEPs and ACE as much as possible while defending as much PLA as i can with my portfolio and seeing what is left over at a college. Charter Oak seems to be the most amenable to this from what i have read but won't talk to me directly until i register.

Any advice would be lovely,
Kokes

UMPI BAS is not possible for you. "A student entering the program must have an Associate of Applied Science degree from an accredited community or technical college." http://catalog.umpi.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=7&poid=709&hl=applied+science&returnto=search

However, the UMPI Bachelor's of Liberal Studies is basically the same thing as the BAS but without the AAS requirement. With either UMPI or TESU, it would be less than ~$8k.

I would recommend the UMPI BLS. They apply a max of 90 transfer credits towards a degree and accept ACE and CLEPS. A UMPI 8 week session is $1,700 and the norm to complete 30 credits is 2-3 sessions ($3,400-$5,100).

The general information is accurate but the specific Sophia/Study.com course recommendations may not be accurate.

Welcome to the board, great intro post with the addendum and template, along with some extra info.  Wow, what a budget you have saved up for education purposes!  Anyways, my regular suggestion continues to be the triple trifecta of cost, ease, speed... certs, degree, experience... A/B/M combo (associates/bachelors/masters), ROI/Value, customize/personalize educational goals.   I recommended this earlier in the month, I would recommend you do the exact same thing: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-CS-Degree-What-would-be-the-best-path
