Associates in CS help - torin - 09-13-2025

Hello,

I was originally (slowly) working towards a BS degree in CS, and have just been hammering out Gen Eds at Sophia, but now am on a time crunch and need to get at least an Associates hopefully by the end of next summer to resolve a state licensing issue I'm having.  I've done the following classes on Sophia and I'm looking for help on figuring out a plan on what I need to get done, I know some of these classes aren't necessary for an AS but I was working towards the BS big picture lol

I've completed:

Art History I
College Algebra
Environmental Science
Financial Accounting
Introduction to Business
Introduction to Chemistry
Introduction to Chemistry Lab
Introduction to College Mathematics
Introduction to Ethics
Introduction to Information Technology
Introduction to Nutrition
Introduction to Sociology
Managerial Accounting
Principles of Finance
Project Management
U.S. Government
U.S. History I
Visual Communications

I'm in the middle of completing English Comp I and Spanish I on Sophia.  I haven't done any coursework anywhere else atm as the original plan was to finish at Sophia first.
Any help from anyone who has done an AS in CS at TESU before would be greatly appreciated.

does it have to be specifically an Associates in Computer Science ?

could it be applied computer studies or computer information technology ?

I would finish out of the GE first, then do your CS, then do the CS/Science electives.

No, it doesn't have to be specifically, as long as it's related to computers.  I'm just trying to figure out how to do the requirements for whichever one is easiest with what I have done so far, while only doing the 2 required classes at TESU

Welcome to the board, great initial post with some info. It's best to provide an update to your post with the details asked for in the addendum and template here: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-New-to-DegreeForum-How-this-Area-works

After reviewing whatever update you may have (and the extra info if at all possible), we can provide you a degree path like this one here, I just replied to them a couple minutes or so ago: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-Degree-Planning-Advice--50368

What kind of degree do you want?: Associates related to Computers, was going for Bachelors but time constraints means I need to do the Associates first.  Trying to figure out which offered at TESU would use the most of my credits already done at Sophia.
Current Regional Accredited Credits: 0
Current ACE, CLEP, or NCCRS Credits: 52 (all from Sophia as listed above)  All classes 3 credits except the Chemistry Lab which is 1.  All classes grades at least A- or higher.
Any certifications or military experience?:  Nothing recent
Budget: Not a problem
Commitments:  Full time teacher
Dedicated time to study: 3-4 hours weekdays, more weekends, 8-10 hours a day during public school vacations
Timeline: Trying to finish the Associates by August 2026
Tuition assistance/reimbursement: Not an issue

Hmm, cool and interesting, how did you become a teacher? That's awesome, you've got X credits already towards that end goal. I would follow through with the creation of a spreadsheet using the templates linked to TESU for the degree plans. You just need to complete the recommended remaining credits for the Associates. You can do more credits towards the Bachelors, while waiting for TESU to evaluate the credits going into the Associates. My suggestion is the AAS Applied Computer Studies and the AS Computer Science, as you can reuse the credits for both degrees!

Would UMPI's BLS with Management Information Systems Minor work? Or the Project Management Minor? Those may be faster and easier than a bachelor's in CS.

I was always working towards a Bachelors and UMPI was my first choice, but I'm trying to get an Associates ASAP and finish the Bachelors later.  If you can suggest a school that I can do one faster using the credits I already have, I would greatly appreciate it.

RE: Associates in CS help - ss20ts - 09-21-2025

You can complete an associate degree from UMPI!

https://www.umpi.edu/yourpace/academic_programs/liberal-studies/

For many people the bachelor's degree is not much longer than the associate degree. You have far more options with a bachelor's degree than an associate degree in online learning.
