Help for daughter #2 w UMPI BABA - MaMichelle - 09-18-2025
Daughter #1 finiished her WGU nursing degree and saved a lot of time and money thanks to the help from the experts on this forum. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Daughter #2 wants to pursue a BABA in management and leadership at UMPI. She is starting with the following:
Associates degree from Utah Valley University (UVU)--all RA credits, all grade of C or better. Mostly As and Bs. She finished these as a concurrent enrollment high school student so they only cost her $5 per credit hour.
Coms 1010, public speaking, 2 hours
Coms 1010L, public speaking lab, 1 hour
SLSS 1000, university student success, 3 hours
ENGL 1010, Intro to acad. writing, 3 hours
EXCI 1091 Fitness for life, 2 hours
MGMT 2240 Business calculus, 3 hours
NUTR 1020 Foundations Human Nutrition, 3 hours
SLSS 101R Student Success Topics, 3 hours
ENGL 2010 Intermediate Writing, 3 hours
MGMT 2340 Business Statistics I, 3 hours

Plus she is currently doing a 12 month study aborad program at the Shanghai University of Engineering Science. I don't know if any credit from tha will transfer, but these are the classes she will have completed while there, plus she should have passed the HSK Chinese Language Competency Exam at at least a level 4, bare minimum, and more probably level 5 or 6.)
Chinese 1, Comprehensive Chinese Beginner-Advanced
Chinese 2, Spoken Chinese & Speaking Beginner-Advanced
Chinese 3, Written Chinese Intermediate-Advanced
Chinese 4, Business Chinese Advanced
Chinese 5, Chinese Characters Beginner
HSK Standard Courses Levels 1-6 (HSK exam prep) One per 12 week term. (I think this course repeats for 6 terms until you can pass all the HSK exams. Realistically she will probably get through level 4 or 5 unless she elects to extend for a few months to finish Level 6)
Chinese Culture 7, one class per 12-week term each on a different topic. She is doing Chinese calligraphy right now, and will have others like Traditional Chinese Crafts, Tai Chi, and Shanghai Dialect)
Intangible Chinese Cultural Heritage Masterclass--one per 12 week term, each with a different focus.
Expert Lectures ("Thematic discussions on topics related to China's economy, culture, and more") one per 12 week term
HSK Intensive Course 10. She said this is actually kind of a remedial class and she will not need to take it; she's already doing great in the HSK classes she has taken and her teacher told her that with a little bit of extra study she can skip level 3, so she's working on that right now.)
And no, we're not Chinese! Nobody else in the family speaks it, although her dad and I have been to Shanghai a couple of times for business.
She has been in China for about 3 months, so 1/4 of the way through her program. If possible, she would like to finish up her BABA at UMPI before she comes home. She said she has a LOT of extra time to study and that her coursework at Shanghai University of Engineering Science is not too demanding.
Any help you could offer with degree planning would be greatly appreciated.

Age minimum is 20 - so you will want to confirm she is old enough.
The deadline for Fall 2 is next week 9/26, to start on 10/27. I would recommend applying or if she needs more time to submit her documents, to aim for Spring 1, which has a deadline of 12/12 and starts in January. She seems to have a lot of the general education and some of the electives, and could quickly fill in any missing electives using Sophia or Study.

My daughter is over age 20. I would like to understand of the courses that remain for her degree if there are any cheap sources of credit for any of those, since it looks like SDC will no longer be an option for her. Removing the ability to do some of these via SDC changes the financial equation rather substantially for us.

Business 303 Management Information Systems BUS 244 Management Information System 3.00
Business 110 Business Math > MAT 140 Mathematics for Business 3.00
Business 302 Foundations of Leadership > BUS 260 Leadership 3.00
You can do the following via Sophia for the major:
Sophia Class > UMPI Class - Credits
Microeconomics and Macroeconomics > ECO 207 Macro & Micro Economics 3.00 (plus 3 credits of ECO 2XX)
She already has the following from Sophia:
Business Communication > PCJ 215 Business Communication 3.00
You can also check whether she can take Saylor Academy in China, as according to the UMPI database these are still valid (self-study and only $5 for the exams):
BUS 200 Business Ethics > BUS 353 Business Ethics 3.00
BUS 203 Principles of Marketing > BUS 330 Marketing Management 3.00
BUS 209 Organizational Behavior > BUS 335 Organizational Behavior 3.00
Saylor also has Financial Accounting, Intro to Business and Management Information System listed, but I believe folks usually recommend SDC for those.

@MaMichelle, how is your daughter learning Chinese so easily? You wouldn't happen to have a tutor for her or something along those lines? Does she and the rest of the family (hubby or you, etc) speak anything else at home besides English? I think it would help if there is a second language or a similar language...

From what I remember, they should still take the class PCJ215. Having said that, you want to verify by speaking with admissions or advising after you've applied and have an evaluation. You can continue sending transcripts to them and then enroll when you've got your max of transfer credits...

I was actually enrolled in Fall 1 for BABA PM&IS and had PCJ215 transferred in. But now, COM 210 is the only course left on the sheet to meet the requirement. Anyway, I just emailed my advisor earlier to confirm this and am awaiting her response to share with you guys.
