Pre- rec for nursing degree planning - LadySearchDog - 03-27-2026

Well, I messed up. I need to get all my pre rec for nursing school done ASAP.
I was mostly going to get it all done by Fall, 2027.  So, I have until then to get:

- Medical terminology -3 credits
- Biology- 4 credits
- College Algebra - 3 credits
- A/P -5 credits
- Nutrition - 3 credits
- Chemistry - 4 credits
- Statistics- 3 credits
- microbiology - 4 credits
and the hard one to find
-Pathophysiology - 3 credits

I am wanting to go to Hesston Community College in Hesston, Kansas for their Register Nurse Batchlor program Fall 2027. That's 35 credits! And all hard Science and Math classes but nutrition and medical terminology. Is this possible? Should I do Fall of 2028? Where can I get the classes done at. I want no deadlines or start/stop dates. Thanks.

Thanks for any advice and help.

Janine

Hi Janine,

I'm always hesitant to give advice on nursing pre-requisites. Many schools have different requirements, so comply with the coursework this particular school requires, and understand nursing schools may or may not accept coursework from other sources! I suggest you speak to the admission counselor.

I agree.

If your programs allow online classes, I can recommend these couple of schools. However, AP being five credits at your school makes question if they would take the four hour AP I and AP II courses.

By no deadlines...do you mean like assignment deadlines or school calendar deadlines? If your school accepts them and

Clovis Community College has deadlines (and I have taken classes needed with them remotely for years). During the summer semester, the max amount of credits you can take is eight hours. They often have eight week and/or sixteen week options for many classes.

Biology (any), AP I/AP II, chemistry

Nursing classes: Pathophysiology, Healthcare Ethics (even if not required looks good on nursing school applications), Medical Terminology
Nutrition: Human Nutrition

Barton Community College also has a great variety in their online options. (I recommend for College Algebra, Chemistry and Stats.)

RE: Pre- rec for nursing degree planning - Stonybeach - 03-28-2026

Another option is to look for a technical school that has a licensed vocational/practical nursing certificate program that takes about 12 to 18 months to complete, including prerequisites. Then take the NCLEX-PN exam and get licensed. Gain acceptance to an LPN-to-RN/BSN program. There are many advantages to becoming a licensed LPN as soon as possible, but the main one is that one can make money as a nurse while pursuing an RN/BSN. Many will disagree with me because so many hospitals require their nurses to be RN with a BSN. I've seen many interruptions in life, and an LPN is better than no license at all and a partially completed BSN! "Building block approach."

Fortunately for you, every single one of those courses is available online at Luna Community College in New Mexico for $51/credit out of state!!

The only downside is that only the first 6 credits in a single semester are offered at the $ 51/credit rate for out-of-state students.

So that means if you ONLY want to pay $51/credit, you'll be capped at 18 credits a year (Summer, Fall, Spring) unless you're willing to pay the extra cost. The 7th credit in a single semester costs an extra $600!!!!! (This is a moot point if you are actually from New Mexico). But as long as you stay at 6 credits or below every single semester, you won't pay the out-of-state fees.

https://luna.edu/tuition_rates_and_residency

Go to advanced search. Choose the term you want, and then choose LCC Online Campus.

https://luna.edu/schedule

- Medical Terminology - 3 credits
- General Biology 1 + Lab - 4 credits
- College Algebra - 3 credits
- Human Anatomy and Physiology 1 + Lab- 4 credits
- Human Anatomy and Physiology 2 + Lab - 4 credits
- Nutrition - 3 credits
- Introduction to Chemistry and Lab - 4 credits
- Statistics- 3 credits
- Microbiology + Lab - 4 credits
-Pathophysiology - 4 credits

Another option is ASU Earned Admissions. Pay $25 to start the course, $400 to transcript it. Only transcript if you get an A. If not, restart the course without getting a W. You can take as many courses as you want per semester. Many are even self-paced and they give you an entire year to complete the course.

https://courses.ulc.asu.edu/
- Biology of the Living World + Lab - 4 credits
- College Algebra - 3 credits
- Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology + Lab -4 credits
- Introductory Chemistry and Lab - 4 credits
- Elements of Statistics - 3 credits

Also have a few extras you might be interested in that I've taken that are easy A's :

- Introduction to Health Professions (3)
- Culture and Health (3)
- Introduction to Health and Wellness (3)
- Introduction to Psychology (3)
- Introduction to Sociology (3)
- Human Origins (3)
- Introduction to Solar Systems + Lab (4)
- Introduction to Environmental Science + Lab (4)
- Introduction to Marine Biology + Lab (4)
I recommend a combination of both Luna CC and ASU Earned Admissions if you're trying to finish by Fall 2027.

Hi Janine,

I highly highly recommend you take these courses at PortageLearning.edu. They have all of the courses that you listed. They are self-paced. I took A&P I and II there w/ labs. There are no textbooks. I think the course is very good, despite not being a traditional course. A&P I @ Portage helped me get a 91 in A&P portion on the HESI exam for nursing school.

If you do not need a letter grade, I suggest taking any non-science lab courses at Sophia.org or Study.com, but Sophia is more affordable and faster to complete. They recently added Lifespan Developmental Psychology, which is typically needed for nursing school. Straighterline is also another option, but many labs are still ordered via labkit, whereas, Study.com and Sophia have virtual labs. Sophia is 99/mo and Study.com is 235/mo for college saver (you can only earn credit via this option and its unlimited courses per month now)

Sophia has A&P, Chemistry, Biology with separate lab courses, but you have to check to see if your institution will accept ACE credits for non-science courses, most will not. Sophia also has Intro to Sociology and Psychology, which you should take if you are applying to multiple nursing schools.

Pathophysiology can be taken at Study.com, Excelsior or NMJC, but you may want to continue at Portage if you take A&P there and continue. Portage transcripts come from a real college in PA (Geneva College), no indication that it was taken online.

Statistics I recommend Sophia, I took the Basic Stats there first before Intro to Stats even though I wasnt planning to transfer it, it helped a lot. I took college algebra and nutrition at Sophia. Again, most colleges will accept ACE credits for non-science courses, so save time and money by doing these at Sophia unless they specifically wont accept ACE credits, or credits from Sophia. Some colleges will accept ACE credits via CLEP, but not Sophia, Straighterline, Study.com. If thats the case, you can take the Chemistry and Biology CLEP.

Medical terminology will be cheaper at Sophia if your institution will accept ACE credits. If not, take it with PortageLearning.edu. Apparently it is very easy, and many finish in 21 days, because that is the fastest you can complete any self-paced courses at PL.

Pathophysiology can be taken at Study.com, Excelsior or (NMJC and Rio Grande Salado are colleges that are affordable for letter grades) but you may want to continue at Portage if you take A&P there and like the structure.

You should visit allnurses.com and search where people are taking prereq courses. This is how I learned about Portage Learning, NMJC, Rio Salado and there are more options that I just cant think of or havent visited in a while. Many 8 week accelerated options as well. You can utilize the search feature on the allnurses forum to find helpful threads related to your situation. There was a school many people raved about for an "easy pathophysiology course". This was some years back but type those 3 words in the search feature, it may come up.

With these online options, you can start nursing school in 2027 no problem. Although, if you were really motivated, this fall would not be impossible if you utilize Portage (Sciences/labs) + Sophia (Non-sciences). PL is proctored, labs are open book. Sophia is not proctored and all quizzes and exams are open book.
