Most Cost Effective Way to Complete HES ALM? - Mint Berry Crunch - 06-29-2026
I've been looking at Harvard's HES ALM degree for a couple of years, and I am interested. If someone wanted to complete, what would be the most efficient route? Would doing the Public Leadership Credential (PLC) first followed by enrolling in the ALM be the best way to do it?

Become an eligible employee of any kind at Harvard. Then Extension School courses are $40 each. $10 per semester hour is low even for DegreeForum! (Most courses are 4 semester hours.)
One of my friends worked in Harvard University Dining Services. He became academic head of the HES pre-medical student society.

If you completed the PLC, congratulations! I also completed that program. You must use the credential within three years and it will apply solely to the ALM in Government. You'll still have to take the Proseminar. I completed the PLC in May 2023, and graduated with my ALM in English in 2024 and served as HESA President. Happy to be of service here.
I studied English when I was there. I did the Poetry In America series to keep my costs low. Those courses were 1k each for 4 graduate credits and I used them toward the ALM in English. When you go to register for courses, the DCE course search that pops up from the student dashboard depending on the major you choose will actually let you know where your credits will apply depending on your major. You could probably use 2 of the poetry classes toward a certificate and as part of your electives depending on the program.
I highly recommend spending as much time on campus as possible. I was able to be a paid marketing assistant at the Harvard Art Museums, which was super cool. I unfortunately didn't qualify for a tuition discount, but it is true that if you work for the university, you can do HES classes for 40 dollars a pop. I now work as an English Instructor at a local college, so I am using my degree. Please do let me know if you have any additional questions and if I can be of service. I believe I was part of the first inaugural PLC cohort. It was nearly 6k to do the full credential. I know the price has gone up since. It depends on your degree. For my ALM, I did two Poetry in America courses first. They were 1k each, then I did the Proseminar. I finished my PLC while I was already enrolled. I would skip the PLC unless you want Kennedy School Executive Education status. It takes a lot of time, mandatory weekly group work with folks in different time zones, and costs, so if the degree is what you really want, I'd find a degree that lets you do the PIA classes to bring down the cost. Once you're accepted, most people who fill out FAFSA qualify for a grant that pays for one and a half courses. I hope this information is helpful! Good luck!!!

Perhaps easier than a messy divorce is if you just got a job… almost any job at all… at Harvard, and took advantage of the all-but-free HES tuition benefit. I completed an ALM and were a few Harvard employees in some of my classes. Remote positions do exist. Your eligibility may vary.
I also exploited the PIA classes when they were $250 for everyone thanks to a tip on this very board. Those classes are no longer available. But one tip is once you’re an admitted degree candidate, they’re likely to give you the tuition discount that is basically half off. From what I’ve heard from others, even if you’re right at six figures of family income, you’re likely to be eligible. Don’t disclose what your household income is but know that if it’s under 100k per year, you’re almost a lock for the discount/scholarship/whatever you wanna call it.

That is a pity about the Poetry in America classes. I logged into the Harvard registration dashboard to confirm, and you are correct. That makes me sad. I loved those courses.
If you're interested in Global Development Practice, the MIT MicroMasters pathway is cheaper than the PLC. I would use that to apply to both MIT and HES because the credential can be applied to multiple programs. I didn't see a rule that says if you're admitted to both, that you can't do both. I believe the certificate covers 3 intro classes, but don't quote me. There are other MicroMasters Pathways, as well. HES does give you 5 years to graduate once you're admitted. I'd pace your courses accordingly.

To pay for tuition, I took loans out against my 401k once per semester. The payments were deducted automatically from my paycheck so I didn’t have an extra “bill” to manage. And because you are the lender to yourself, what interest you pay just goes back into your 401(k), making it effectively an interest free loan.
