My Homeschool Degree Journey - JJ_in_NC - 09-17-2026
Hello,
I have been reading this forum for a couple of months now and appreciate all of the great information here!
I am a 16-year old homeschooler in NC. I did public school all my life but switched to homeschool this year for my junior year.
Instead of following any kind of homeschool curriculum, my plan is to do a bunch of CLEP exams for free using Modern States and have those count as my high school work while at the same time working towards a Bachelors in Computer Science from Thomas Edison.
Here is my rough plan:
CLEPs (45-48 credits):
Introductory Sociology [Civic and Global Leadership]
Introductory Psychology [General Elective]
Human Growth and Development [General Elective]
Introduction to Educational Psychology [General Elective]
Analyzing & Interpreting Literature (6 credits) [Knowledge of Human Cultures]
College Composition with Essay (6 credits) [Intellectual and Practical Skills]
Principles of Marketing [General Elective]
Principles of Management [General Elective]
College Algebra [Intellectual and Practical Skills]
US History I & II (6 credits) [Knowledge of Human Cultures]
Spanish Language (6/9 credits) [General Elective]
TECEPs (24 credits to fulfill TESU's RA requirement):
Marriage and the Family [Knowledge of Human Cultures]
Introduction to Comparative Politics [Civic and Global Leadership]
Computer Concepts and Applications [Maybe Computer Science Electives?]
Learning in the Digital Age
Environmental Ethics [Civic and Global Leadership]
Introduction to Entrepreneurship
Introduction to Business

I still need to figure out 1 more TECEP I will take. For the rest of the requirements, I imagine I will take mainly Study.com courses with some Sophia (maybe for Python programming and Calculus) and a bit of Coursera (a certification or two in something like the AI engineering).
I will be making a separate post soon about my experience with my first CLEP I took on Monday (Introductory Sociology) and then I am scheduled to take Introductory Psychology CLEP today.

Good ideas and good job! We have a 16 year old homeschooled son in our household. He took DSST English Composition and passed. Then took CLEP English (without essay) and failed. So he took English I through Straighterline. He didn't like the exams and much prefers study.com. My point is: There are many ways to skin that cat. If CLEP/Modern States work for you, it can be the most cost effective way to get credits, but if it doesn't work for you, don't give up, just change your strategy. We are rooting for you!

Thank you! I can understand how CLEP exams are not for everyone but I was thinking that with CLEPs being free through Modern States, I can try cramming for an exam and if it doesn't work out, then study.com can be my backup plan.

Interesting, you've got a good head start, I would recommend homeschoolers to get all they can with the cheapies and freebies! That's a pretty sound plan, getting all the general education and electives using CLEP. All the while, getting TECEPs to fulfill RA requirements. You'll just need to complete the cornerstone and capstone combo at TESU, lastly, pay the Edison Accelerate fee.
One of the other moderators merged posts from a member, as they had one for each UMPI class and they were just looking for basic info for each one, advice was pretty much the same for each class. So, Instead of having one thread each CLEP, I'll merge your CLEP threads into a status thread... When the time comes for TECEPs, you should do the same, a thread for all of them.
