English Comp - Shoot Me Now - thatbrian - 09-21-2008

Thanks to IC and all of you great folks here I am almost halfway to a BA. I have tested out of all my credits so far, but English Comp was the only class I wanted to take for the experience. Now I'm three weeks into a comp 101 class at a local community college and I want to quit. I simply hate writing. A root canal is more appealing to me than writing an essay. Part of my problem is that I never even wrote in HS (and that was 25 years ago)because I missed more classes than I was in and never did homework. I just freeze up when I try to write and I am ready to give up on this whole deal because I don't see myself getting through 2 classes like this. I'm sure I would not pas the CLEP so what do I do? I thought that math would be the end of me, but comp is looking like it will instead. Any advice before I have a meldown would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Brian

I am also not a strong writer, so I know what you mean. However, don't give up just because writing is not your strongest attribute. I think it was a good idea that you decided to take the course. At the very least the course should help you become more confident with your writing skill. Remember you can always take the CLEP. Though, if you chose to continue the course I recomend that you have someone with good grammar skills check your work before turning it in. Just don't give up and good luck.

Wait.....what did Cyrano write the above passage for you? Your writing ability is just fine if the above is an example. Have you seen posts on internet forums(present forum excepted)? Compared to those, you are Tennyson. Just write like you talk and you'll be fine. You are probably just frustrated by all those rules.

I should talk Math has held me back for way too many years and I gotta get beyond the fear and a lack of confidence in my math ability.

Hang in there, you can do it.

While I personally like writing, I only like writing about what I want to write about hilarious so I understand how tortured you feel.

Schedule the English comp CLEP today. Set it for later next week. Study up on the specific exam feedback and do it but DON'T stop your comp class.

If you pass, blow your teacher a kiss and hasta la vista baby- you get to skip ENG101 and ENG102. If you don't, just keep plugging along until your 6 month mark and try again. Even if you have to take it a second time, it still means possibly getting to skip ENG102.

LatinTea Wrote:I would go over and check out the Specific Exam Feedback forum. Go to the English Comp section. There are some great tips on how to write an essay for the CLEP quickly and concisely. There are also some sites listed to give you additiional helps. I think the ideas there could also with a comp class.

I agree with the previous post. Keep going with your class. The experience will make you better prepared for the CLEP if you need to go that route.

Thanks, good advice. I'll check the feedback section for tips.

You nailed it. While I can write and communcate my thoughts, I am having a really hard time doing it by the book. I just lack the exoperience and practice I should have gotten a long, long time ago.

Thanks!

Thanks, great idea Jennifer. I do like writing, but only about what I want to, and in the way that I want to. The rules stop my creativity cold especially because I'm not very familiar with them.
