English I at Straighterline (review) - Epiphany - 03-26-2009 (All the spelling and punctuation mistakes in this review are intentional. Reallyâ¦) To start out on the positive: I like Straighterline. I think they offer a good service at a good price. I really enjoyed the Accounting II course. I didnât much enjoy the English I course. The course consisted of several short papers and some quizzes. The review material was good, and not too boring at all. I like their powerpoint style presentations. They also have review activities, which amount to crossword like games. Those were a complete waste of time, and you don;t need to complete them to take the quizzes. Quizzes: The quizzes are very straightforward, and if you go through the material they provide for you, you should get close to a 100% on all of them. Papers: The papers, I didnât like. Itâs not that I donât like writing. The paper review/grading cycle works like this.
Overall Impressions: Whatâs the moral of that story? Well. Your mileage may vary. But if I did it all over again, I wouldnât spend so much time fretting over revising the draft it was pointless for me. Would I take another English course from Straighterline, or would I do it again knowing what I know now? Maybe. Itâs still good bang for the buck. Again, I preferred their Accounting II course to the English I. How did I do: According to my handy excel spreadsheet... looks like I've earned a B. Which is all I expected after I did the first paper, and it's all I need. So overall I'm satisfied with the mark. I suppose could make a stink about all the problems with the paper review, but it's not really worth the time or effort. I have more courses to finish on my way to an EC degree. English I at Straighterline (review) - jonasling - 03-26-2009 Thank you very much for the comprehensive review. How long did it take to complete English I? Do you have Accounting knowledge before you started the StraighterLine Accounting course? How difficult is it? English I at Straighterline (review) - lmech - 03-26-2009 Yes, thank you for the review. This should help me greatly.
English I at Straighterline (review) - RobTACP - 03-26-2009 I am in the middle of Straighterline English I and find the above review spot on. The "take hits on the first couple papers after following tutors feedback, then ignore draft advice for future papers" strategy is exactly what I have ended up doing. Perhaps if they aligned a tutor with a paper for draft *and* grading, it would make more sense but until they do so, I would have to suggest using the draft review for grammar/punctuation checks while ignoring any serious structural changes. Also, the total points for the course, quizzes, papers and all - 290. Each paper is worth a max of 21 points, so don't get too wrapped up with a specific paper, either while writing or after getting dinged some points. Don't lose any sleep over it and press on. Overall, I like it for a fairly easy and inexpensive option to knock out the basic Eng req. Your mileage may vary, etc, etc... English I at Straighterline (review) - alleycat - 03-27-2009 How long has this course taken you so far? My son is thinking about taking it and i was just wondering about the time period it takes? My son is thinking about taking it and i was just wondering about the time period it takes? Thank you When I knocked the course out about a month ago, It took me 2 weeks. However, I just wanted to get it over with so--as a result--I got a "B" (242/280). English I at Straighterline (review) - alleycat - 03-27-2009 Thank you! I procrastinated a little sending in the last paper... but only because I had moved on to other tests and courses by then. English I at Straighterline (review) - alleycat - 03-27-2009 Thank you so much for the information. Was the course very time consuming? He is just so busy I am wondering how much time to allow with in the 2 to 3 week period? He will probably do English Comp II when he is done. English I at Straighterline (review) - entwive - 03-28-2009 Hi, Depending on how motivated you are the courses can be completed quickly. I used the $99.00 option to do four courses in about three weeks. I believe that I received a *B* in all of the courses and I worked at least 8 hours per day. On the bright side, I completed Composition I, Algebra, Macroeconomics and Accounting I. I found great support from the advisor but would have to agree that there is a disconnect with the composition tutors and final grading process. This review should be taken with a grain of salt. Best of luck with the classes. I found them to be a tremendous value! |
