American Literature - sdeserio - 07-01-2009

I am planning to take the American lit clep soon. Any suggestion, tips, or study materials? I searched for info on this test, but did not find that much info. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

All I did was use the REA book which was very short, study literature terms, eg. Personification, and take the free peterson's exams. Good Luck!

I just downloaded the official CLEP $10 sample test, then got coaching from my English Major sister. The sample was not enough... I remember that there was alot more about early American writing and about poetry in general than I felt prepared for! Then again, I am not a poetry fan, so that was all new to me! I think if I had to do it again, I would get some anthologies from the timeframes described in the test description... just to get to know some of the authors better.

This is the timeframe thing I'm talking about:

15% The Colonial and Early National Period (Beginnings–1830)
25% The Romantic Period (1830–1870)
20% The Period of Realism and Naturalism (1870–1910)
25% The Modernist Period (1910–1945)
15% The Contemporary Period (1945–Present)

I would've done more reading from the Colonial and Romantic periods, if I had it do over! But, that's also because I just felt more comfortable with the modern stuff already...

Whoops! I just realized you were talking about American Literature... Not Analyzing and Interpreting Literature. Sorry!

Thanks for your help! It looks like i will get the Idiot's Guide (very expensive). I was doing a search for this exam, however i didn't find that much info like the English Lit test. Is there a thread on here that will give more info?

You can only access this if you're an IC subscriber though.

I couldn't believe it was over $100 on Amazon then realized it may be out-of-print. I was able to borrow it from my local library. Maybe you can check-out this option. It was my primary resource for passing this test (you can read the others above, but I highly recommend this book)

Any other advice on this exam? Taking the exam in two weeks. I just ordered the idiots guide. Anything else? What is the best study method for this exam?

Just to piggy-back on what everyone else already said. I had a friend who took the American Literature CLEP. All he used was the Complete Idiot's Guide to American Literature. That book seems to be the single best source of study.

I would recommend that you purchase the Petersons practice CLEP for this one.
