Spanish CLEP primary study materials? - SKPres - 09-01-2009

OK, I've searched the site, and still have more questions about the Spanish CLEP, so please bear with me.

I took 4 years of Spanish in high school (I had to take SPN 1 and SPN 2 twice due to the credits being received at a DoDDS school). I'm wondering if it's really feasible for me to take the CLEP test and get credit for Spanish I and II. I bought the REA book, took the first practice test, and scored HORRIBLY. I honestly didn't even understand many of the questions.

My wife seems to believe that with time and study I can recall the Spanish I learned and pass the CLEP. I'm hoping that's the case, because I really want to take the CLEP so that I might be able to graduate sooner.

I am serious about studying for the CLEP, and am willing to do what anyone recommends. Is there anything you guys would recommend besides InstaCert, Peterson's, REA, etc? I don't mind having to pay money to ensure better results, either. By that, I mean I'm willing to pay memberships and whatnot to gain access to information that will TRULY help me pass the Spanish CLEP.

My first thought is to add listening practice. I have liked the learner.org videos for French. They also have Spanish - Resource: Destinos: An Introduction to Spanish

If I think of something more, I'll let you know.

Hi there,

I took the spanish clep test and don't really speak spanish and I scored a 71 just from using the Petersons Practice Exams and study guide. If you took spanish in high school you should be fine.

I also recently took the Spanish Clep! I took 3 years in highschool and have been to Mexico several times with my church. I thought I had a pretty good chance of passing this test. I did pass, but wasn't able to get a high enough score for the Spanish 2 level(the full 12 credits). The audio portion was the hardest for me. The sound on the computer was really bad quality. So I would suggest really concentrating on the listening portion of the test. I believe I was really only able to pass because of the written portion. I studied for about a month on this one because I was also scoring badly on the audio portion of the test. Go to the library and pick up some children's videos in Spanish and watch them with the subtitles. This helped me alot and I also got children's books and read them. They were very helpful! I used the REA clep prep as well. In the test it might help to have a piece of paper and write down words that you know while they are talking, although you only have about 10 seconds to choose an answer in between questions. Hope this helps! You'll do great Smile ~kelsey

My major worry is not remembering my Spanish. I took the first REA practice test, and I honestly didn't understand about 80% of what the test was saying. I know that probably spells doom for me. Well, I have a week to consider, so I'll spend my time looking at all the info you guys gave me. Thanks again.

I have read on this forum that REA is good for this exam. Be sure to work through the study guide section of the book (if there is one). Give yourself a chance to learn the material first. That should help to refresh what you know and prepare you for the practice exams.
