Finite Math at the Big 3? - PeteDude - 11-24-2009

Does anyone know, would a finite math course satisfy the PreCalc requirement for Business majors/concentrations at the Big 3? I'm currently working through Aleks right now for College Algebra, but it is taking forever and I want to explore some backup options.

I can't say I "know" from experience, but I would suggest seeking approval for a specific course. For one thing, each of the schools has a different policy.

Let's say you're going to Excelsior. DSST's "Business Math" exam looks not unlike a finite math course, and is not sufficient for the EC Business math requirement. On the other hand, Louisiana State's Business Math course #1435 has calculus as a prerequisite, and calculus itself would fulfill the requirement. On the third hand, suppose you persuaded LSU to take you without the pre-req, maybe because you have a good placement score based on self-study. Would EC take the business math course then? Only they can say.

Pete, I'm taking Finite Math next semester at our local CC and have the same question. I'm hoping TESC accepts it; for the BSBA they require Precalculus Math or Quantitative Analysis. Actually, I was planning the ALEKS course would be MY backup in the event they don't accept FM for the math requirement! Big Grin

Thanks. Please come back and update the thread once you know. . .

I won't know for sure for some time as enrolling at TESC is still down the road for me...

I did some searching and found that the TESC course MAT-119 Quantitative Business Analysis, uses Finite Mathematics with Applications, 9th ed. as its text. Mat-119 satisfies the BSBA math requirement for TESC.

Unless someone can confirm otherwise, I'm going on the assumption that Finite Math = Quantitative Business Analysis...
