It seems it is not possible to completly test out pursuing a BS in Information Technology. I think I iwll have to take several courses in IT at Excelsior.

Does anyone have a roadmap to pursue this degree? I want to take as many CLEP, Dante, etc to test out and receive as many credits possible before enrolling and taking the remaining required classes at Excelsior.

Thanks!

Well... For a BSBA with a concentration in MIS, you need 18 credits with 9 of those being UL credits. (And you'll need 3 more UL credit in a business subject as well, but it doesn't have to be computers.)

There are 3 tests that are IT tests, between the CLEP and DSSTs, and one of the LL CLEP or DSST will fulfill a Business Core requirement.

The MIS Concentration requires
  • A Business Language (PASCAL? Really?)
  • A Database Management Course
  • A Data Comm, Telecom, or Networking Course
  • A System Analysis & Design course - Its possible that they might accept the MIS DSST for this one.
Which would leave 6 credits for Electives...

In otherwords, you may be able to get 6 credits of testing out of the CLEP & DSSTs (9 if they don't say the two LL tests overlap, but one will be used in the business core, and the other will be used as an elective)

But all in all, it looks like you'll have to take 4 IT classes to get the concentration done.

Or you can try for an 81% on the GRE:Computer Science subject test and get 30 credits, 12 LL & 18UL... But you have to know your stuff... I've been working in the business for 20 years, and have had college and certification training, and to me, the computer science test looks nasty.

And of course, if you have any previous credit for MIS/CS, Excelsior will only accept it for a BSBA MIS if they were taken within the last 10 years. BSBA in non-tech areas follow the same rule but you can appeal the credits, as long as you can provide work experience with contacts showing that you've used the skills from those credits in the last 10 years. There is no time limit for credits when used towards the Liberal Arts degrees.

I'm sure EC would give you credit for Pascal, but I did fine with Java I from my local community College. I suspect VB would do as well.
Systems Analysis & Design is pretty specific thing -- many schools treat it as a capstone for the MIS concentration -- I don't think they would take the MIS DSST for it, though they did give me credit for it towards MIS electives. CLEP Info Systems & Computer applications for my general "Computers" requirement and prereq for the Java class.

Network + and Project+ certs may fit (I would seek approval before taking the exam) but not as UL IIRC.
