Straighterline Managerial Accounting Prerequisite - Paul - 01-25-2010

Since Straighterline Managerial Accounting is Accounting II, is (or should) their Accounting I (be) a prerequisite to it for someone who has not had accounting? Or should they take the Financial Accounting CLEP before Managerial Accounting or does it matter?

Straighterline Accounting I and II should be taken together. It's really more like a two-part course. Even the same book is used. You can knock them both out within the 30 day period if you have lots of time and motivation, but it IS a huge headache.

......even though they (one person) has already had Principles of Financial Accounting (CLEP or DSST I don't remember)? Wouldn't that duplicate with this SL Accounting I & you you lose the 3 credit hours gained OR do you just take SL Accounting I anyway otherwise you won't make it through SL II?? BTW, I'm working with two people here - one person has taken the Financial Accounting CLEP at this point & the other has not at this point. It would be good if both were taking the SL II at the same time. Up until now I was thinking the requirements were: CLEP Principles of Financial Accounting, then (because Managerial Accounting is not offered in CLEP) they take SL II Managerial Accounting. Could someone please set me straight on this?

Straighterline Managerial Accounting Prerequisite - jody28 - 01-27-2010

I just signed up for Accounting II through Straighterline. I will do the Clep for fin. accounting. I think this is the easiest for me, taking one test will be faster than working my way through the entire course. The only other consideration you might have for Straighterline is that FHSU assigns a letter grade, so if you need a good grade to boost your average, this might be a good choice. For me, I just want to get it over with. The course is $39 for EACH course, no $99 per month unlimited courses.
Also, there are two books, Vol I and Vol II for the course.

Hope this helps,

Jody

Yes, they do sell the book in a two part format as well as whole. IMO, the transition is seamless between the two parts. Part 2 directly continues from Part 1, and I can't imagine trying to start straight from part 2 without having done the first. YMMV, I'm sure it can be done but if you are starting without having taken the CLEP, I think doing SL from the beginning would be in your best interest.

If it was me and I had already done CLEP Financial Accounting, I would go straight for SL Accounting 2, BUT I would spend the extra cash to get the full book that contains part 1 and 2. When the lessons start building on things you might not have studied for taking the CLEP, you will be glad you have it.

Whatever you guys decide, good luck.

Janus,

good points with the book and that the material is seamless. Maybe it's easier to get used to the BS quiz questions with easier material. I just took my first quiz and was floored by the results. This is going to be a pain in the neck! I think any questions I got wrong were due to how tricky the questions are and not due to lack of understanding the topic.

Yikes! On to topic 2! Woohoo!!

Jody

PS what were the alternatives to Straighterline??? I wish there would be a good one...

Janus, thanks for all your insight! It is so helpful!!

You're welcome! Don't feel like you're the only one with those complaints either, everyone has trouble with the BS questions and trick wording on the quizzes. Eventually you will start to get a 'feel' for their particular brand of grammatical errors and trickery. Do your best, and good luck!

Jody,

It has not been easy for me either. I am taking macroeconomics...you would think I was a nube(sp?) my first 3 test scores were 68%, 75% and 60% (avg 68%)! I am a solid 3.6 student but you would not know it by the struggle I've had with straighterline. I had no knowledge of economics so was scared to even try to CLEP. Hell I didn't have these issues with ALEKS, and that material was no cakewalk believe me!

I'm just starting chap 13 today and of the last four exams I'm doing much much better. My avg is now 80%, hopefully 83-85% by the end. This is open book for goodness sake. It is a bunch of trick questions and I have probably taken this much too serious but I'm crazy that way. Plus I wanted to have the grades transcribed to fort hays and ace. Fort Hayes so hopefully even though TESC would not count it in my GPA it would show on my transcripts which will help down the road.

Just thought I would let you know...you are not alone! Press on!!banghead  Big Grin

What if you take these courses through Straighterline and transfer them to TESC via ACE? Is a letter grade assigned then?

No, ACE only gives P/F, not grades. And you need a final grade of 70% or above (A C, basically) in the course for a Pass.
