Upper Level credits accepted by Excelsior - asailorshort - 02-16-2010
Hi all!
I'm getting very close to finishing up the remaining credits needed for a BS in Liberal Studies (or liberal arts) at Excelsior. But, as DANTE's has updated their listing of which exams are worth UL credit, I'm unsure which course(s) to take.
From my unofficial evaluation, I essentially only needed 12 UL credits (6 in Arts/Sciences and 6 in anything).
So far I've taken:
Rise and Fall of the Soviet Union (UL)
Civil War and Reconstruction (UL)
*Here's to Your Health (?now listed as UL on DSST page)
(I also previously took Drugs and Alcohol which was included in my unofficial evaluation).
and History of the Vietnam War (LL but needed for my second concentration area)
According to instantcert, essentially the only UL DSST's left for me to take are:
Finance
Money and Banking
Management Info Systems
(none of which appeal to me AT ALL)
However, according to DSST, I could take these courses for UL credit:
Intro to World Religions
Ethics in America
Criminal Justice
Does anyone definitively know what Excelsior accepts as UL? *IF* Excelsior now takes Here's to Your Health as UL, then I'm just one UL DSST away from graduating. But I'd like to know if I'm taking the right exams (without having to pay $750 to enroll in Excelsior first just to find out).

Hi! I just finished Here's to your Health and can tell you that Excelsior definitely does NOT accept this for upper level credit.
Unfortunately, only the exams you listed as not being interest in are accepted for upper credit at Excelsior (Money and Banking, Finance, Management Info Systems). I'm in pretty much the exact same boat. Just finished Civil war and am taking Soviet Union in two weeks and am looking for a few more upper level exams that don't sound as horrible as Finance! Oh, Business Law II is also an accepted upper level, but I figured that one pretty much falls in the same boat.
You could take Excelsior's World Conflicts since 1900 instead of the Vietnam War and get your concentration out of it AND get another upper level course done since there are no other good DSST upper options out there.
If it helps, it's also possible to get access to Excelsior's full list of exams and what they accept for what credit without having to enroll. The full exam catalog requires a login, but you just have to register for the website access. You guys might also check out the new Business Ethics DSST. It will count towards UL humanities credit at EC and is very straightforward.

DSST- Intro to World Religions is only granted LL credit at Excelsior.
For the 6 credits in anything, I would consider the Excelsior 6 credit UL ECE-Literacy Instruction in the Elementary School.
It is pricier then 2 DSST but cheaper then taking 2 separate ECE's. It would give you 6 UL credits in Applied Professional.

I've heard (from jadechow) that Management Information Systems and Business Ethics were the easiest upper level credits she has earned (in that order). Money and Banking is supposedly extremely boring.

My good friend, Ruddigore, is correct. I just took the new Bus Ethics and as Sunshine said, "it's pretty straightforward". Also, I have little to no "computer savvy" and was able to pass the MIS test without a problem. Money and Banking along with Finance were monsters for me. I hated every minute of each one.
Your mileage may vary. I have also heard that the ECE World Pop is not bad. In fact, if I end up needing more UL credits, that's where I am heading after the Civil War.

Ultimately it is up to EC. You can go in and get their catalog from their site entitled: Student Guide to Credit by Exam and see exactly which exams are UL and which LL. The one new one is the new DSST Business Ethics which other forum members have posted EC gave them UL credit for that. Remember, they could change their mind tomorrow unless you have the official plan from them in hand.
You are certainly close enough to be able to finish the balance of these credits with 1 year, if you plan and apply yourself to testing out. Why not register and pay so you get their official plan. Then you can ask all the questions from your counselors and have a written plan that you can get approved and know exactly where you are going with this.

Not sure if anyone else has addressed this yet in other posts, as I just scanned this in a hurry this morning -- but the math in this statement is off a little. 12 UL credits means only 4 courses which is nothing.
On the other hand if you need the 6 in Arts/Science and 6 in anything else classes, we are actually talking about 12 classes x 3 credits each or 36 credits. Again, if straight testing out this is quite doable in less than one year, depending on your study style. Don't forget ECEs! When looking at these check out again on Excelsior's site and try to find those that are both UL and may give 6 credits at a time. It saves you both time and money.

Sorry for the confusion, it's a total of 12 UL credits, or four classes. Since that unnofficial evaluation, I've tested out of Rise and Fall, as well as Civil War, so I should now only need two more UL DSSTs. (Bummer that Here's to Your Health doesn't count, but it is kind of what i figured).
