I want to get my BA in English from TESC.

If anyone has done this or is doing it, what CLEP's have you taken? What were they counted as with regard to degree requirements?

Does TESC require a certain number of "upper division" credits for the major? I'm planning on CLEPing and transferring LL credits for all my non-major courses, and finishing 24 major credits through TESC.

What does CLEP Am. Lit count as? Analyzing & Interpreting Lit?

Also--Anyone know what Intro to Drama would count as? (if anything) CLEP French (12 credits) ?? CLEP Spanish ??

Sorry for all the scattered questions. I'm a bit lost and the TESC admissions counselors are not willing to spend time with me before I apply.

Welcome to the forum

Have you thought about doing a SEARCH of the forum. I found that was easiest way and then if I couldn't find an answer I would put my question forward to a new thread.
More often than not, your answer is already on the forum. It's just a matter of spending some time to do a search.

I am also trying to do the same thing. I'll share the info that I gathered from reading on this board - I can't personally vouch for its accuracy, but others that have done the major have told me the following:

You can fulfill the A&I lit requirement with the A&I lit clep. This will leave 3 extra credits that you can use for your general major.

You can fulfill the survey of world lit with either english or american lit clep. You can use the other for the rest of the major.

Another test you can put towards the major is the DSST technical writing.

Also, you can only have two 100 level courses go towards the major, and the american lit clep is 100 level, so the rest of your courses will have to be 200 level. All the other cleps and dsst i mentioned are 200 level.

This is leave you with 12 credits remaining, one of which will need to be non-western lit.

It's cheap and you can do them on your own time without enrolling at the school. There are other options if you look around.

For the non-western lit, I'm not sure what I'll do, but I will probably end up taking TESC's african encounters. There are a few other online courses you can find, but nothing substantially cheaper. Also, I guess if I take one class there then that will be my gpa since they don't count grades you transfer in.

You can't use clep french or spanish for the major, but they will count towards your degree.

For the Non-Western Literature requirement, another option would be to take a course from Western Washington University. WWU offers two courses that would fulfill the requirement, East Asian Studies 367 Chinese Literature in Translation and East Asian Studies 368 Japanese Literature in Translation. They just updated their website, so not all of the links work right, but here is the site:

I hope this isn't a stupid question, but do you know if Thomas Edison will accept credits from Western Washington University? I love the look of these courses and would really like to take some.

I don't see why they wouldn't...I wonder if that Irish lit. class could be taken for the non-western lit requirement...

If it is regionally-accredited, TESC will accept it in transfer. Remember that transfer courses don't impact your GPA. cheersmate

Found this gem & thought I'd bump it up to the top of the list for any other TESC English majors who are looking for alternatives to the upper level English courses. :-)

I do have a dumb question tho, most of the courses from Western Washington University give 4 to 5 credits for the course. Would I get all 4 or 5 credits when they transfer to TESC or would TESC only take 3 of them? Just curious...
