EC Literature in English Degree Plan - Ruddigore - 03-26-2010

While creating a schedule for my remaining tests, I had to figure out exactly what exams I needed. So I completed my EC spreadsheet, and I'm posting it here to make sure I didn't miss anything major. Big Grin

Speaking of Majors, does what I have under that section appear to be kosher?

Thanks everyone!

Hi Ruddigore!

Great job on your degree plan!

I assume you are going for a Bachelor of Science degree. You are also close to a Bachelor of Arts, if you want it. I think you would just have to choose an Arts & Sciences UL instead of the MIS exam.

I am only counting 27 credits for your major, but I think that is because you got 12 LL for the GRE and not just 9.

I don’t know anything about the major, except this great information that Alissa posted:

http://www.degreeforum.net/excelsior-thomas-edison-charter-oak-specific/6113-gre-subject-tests-2.html#post51505

http://www.degreeforum.net/excelsior-thomas-edison-charter-oak-specific/6113-gre-subject-tests-3.html#post51537

What are you planning to do for the Research & Writing in the major requirement?

By my count, you are planning another 52 credits (without Research & Writing). If you want, you could get your plan down to 120 credits and eliminate some of the other exams.

Thanks so much for your reply, NAP! This is very, very helpful. Saves me from a lot of headache later on.

NAP Wrote:I assume you are going for a Bachelor of Science degree. You are also close to a Bachelor of Arts, if you want it. I think you would just have to choose an Arts & Sciences UL instead of the MIS exam.
I'd prefer a Bachelor of Arts -- I just wasn't sure exactly where the differences were in the makeup of the degree. Do you think Money and Banking DSST (listed under Social Sciences & History in the EC Catalog) would work in the stead of the MIS DSST?

NAP Wrote:I am only counting 27 credits for your major, but I think that is because you got 12 LL for the GRE and not just 9.
You are exactly right. I will amend the original post to reflect this!

That is a very good question. To be frank, I forgot about Research & Writing in the major. Do you think this has to be a course? Or does one of my major courses just have to include Research and Writing?

Wow, thanks again for helping see the things I overlooked!
R.

Hi Ruddigore!

I am glad you thought my comments were helpful.

About the BA:

Here are some of the differences -

For BA the General Education Requirement is: 33 credits
(Choose a 12/9/12, 12/12/9, or 9/12/12 credit combination for Humanities, Social Sciences/History, Natural Sciences/Math)

All of the 30 UL credits need to be Arts & Sciences (which are the same categories as the Gen Ed credits.)

At least 60 LL credits must be in Arts & Sciences. The other 30 LL credits can be Applied Professional or Arts & Sciences.

I think you have all of this already in your plan, but I want to be sure. Would you do a huge favor for me? Put your courses/exams into this template that Alissa made for a BA with major and paste into a new post:

http://www.degreeforum.net/excelsior-thomas-edison-charter-oak-specific/8341-template-ecs-ba.html#post62468

I would be happy to double-check it for you, but it will be a lot easier for me with her template.

About UL Arts & Sciences:

Yes, Money & Banking would work. Anything in the Arts & Sciences (which are the same categories as the Gen Ed credits) will be fine as long as they are not listed under Applied Professional.

About Research & Writing in the major:

According to the 2008 Liberal Arts catalog page 21 (let me know if you have a newer catalog, I’ll need to download it), there are several options for the Research & Writing in the major requirement:

certain Excelsior courses,

an 8 page graded paper written for a UL course for your major,

Excelsior’s Research & Writing in the major 1 UL credit course (an 8 page paper),

or Excelsior’s Graduate Research & Writing 3 grad credits course (4 papers)
(more on grad course - http://www.degreeforum.net/excelsior-thomas-edison-charter-oak-specific/9593-ec-application-enrollment-2.html#post72185)

As a math major, I do not have to do this, but all other majors do. I am thrilled about this policy. (My screen name – NAP – represents my favorite part of independent study and taking exams for credit. There are No Assigned Papers to write!) I don’t really understand the policy, though. I would like to participate on medical research teams, so knowing more about how the research papers are written is important to me. I will probably choose between Excelsior’s UL or grad-level course.

It looks like one of the UL courses you are taking to complete the major could be a way to meet this requirement. I don’t know if they just accept the paper that you submit, or if they re-evaluate it themselves. (I’d have a back-up plan for this.)

Extra credits:

This is certainly an inexpensive and convenient time to be taking some extra exams. If you’d like, I think you could eliminate 4 exams from your plan to get down to 120 credits. If they are all topics that you would like to learn about and receive college credit for, I think that is a good idea, too.

I am very happy to see that you are making plans to complete your major. It has been fun to watch your progress!

I'd just like to add to this as I'm currently in the 5th week of the Research and Writing for Social Sciences course at EC.

Even though its only worth 1 credit, the amount of work I'm doing in the class is almost equivilant of the amount of work that I'm doing in my UL Criminology class at times. The class has been pretty valuable to me so far, as far as formulation and creation of research papers. Its also strengthened my ability to write longer papers in other classes (such as the afformentioned Criminology class.) Before this course, if you had told me that I had to write a 6-10 page paper, I would have run screaming from you. Now, with an understanding of the construction, and what people are looking for, its pretty much cake for me. (But it can still be just as time consuming...)

I wouldn't advise the grad level class unless you were well prepared for it, and your writing background is strong. I also wouldn't advise taking 3 classes while working fulltime and studying for the GRE subject tests, but then again, I'm a hypocrit where that's concerned.. Sigh...

Excellent. I completely forgot about that template. I've been using the wrong one! :willynilly: The updated plan is below. Thanks for posting the link.

Thanks for your research. I can handle a 1 Credit UL course. I popped a message to my EC adviser, so I should have some definitive answers soon.

Wow that was fast!

Yes, this looks good. I am counting 82 LL Arts & Sciences, 31 UL Arts & Sciences, and 7 LL Applied Professional for a total of 120. (plus Research & Writing 0-3 credits)

I’d keep the Literary Time Period with the major and just try to remember that 3 “extra” UL credits are there.

I am surprised that A&I Lit does not duplicate the GRE. That is great!

I’d like to know what your adviser says about your plan.

It seems like you will be able to finish this relatively quickly. Are you thinking about graduate school?

Thanks TMW2010 for adding that information. Great advice!

Your calculator works like mine, I think. Big Grin I'm not majoring in Math, but I love my graphing calculator. I can't make it do half of what it's capable of, but what I can get it to do is still pretty cool.

Yes, that sounds good for the Lit Time Period. I guess it's better to have more UL credits than not enough! Worst case scenario, I take another class, which wouldn't be terrible!

NAP Wrote:I am surprised that A&I Lit does not duplicate the GRE. That is great!

Me too!

I was very pleased to learn that A&I Lit doesn't duplicate credit. A handy 6 credits indeed!

NAP Wrote:It seems like you will be able to finish this relatively quickly. Are you thinking about graduate school?
Yes and yes. I hope to finish my BA by December - which is very doable - and select (and get accepted by) a grad school by fall 2011. We'll see if that's what happens, but one can dream, can't one? Smile

TMW2010 Wrote:I wouldn't advise the grad level class unless you were well prepared for it, and your writing background is strong.
I don't know how strong my writing is, but I enjoy it very much. I hope that works in my favor if I have to take the class. Thanks for blazing the trail with that (and UExcel)!

EC Literature in English Degree Plan - Ruddigore - 03-30-2010

NAP Wrote:I’d like to know what your adviser says about your plan.
Alright, I just received a response from my adviser.

My EC Adviser Wrote:At this point, since you need a large number of credits (40 semester hours), it's best if we plan your degree in bite-size chunks. This is generally how we like to approach situations like yours, or else we run the risk of being overly ambitious and approving you for courses/exams that won't either be offered in the future or otherwise won't apply.

For now, let's approve you for the following 19 credits:

UExcel College Writing
INL 102 Information Literacy
DANTES Rise and Fall of the Soviet Union
DANTES Money and Banking
DANTES Civil War and Reconstruction
CLEP Western Civ I
CLEP Western Civ II

As far as your Research and Writing question goes, we have a system in place whereby students have the opportunity, if they wish, to appeal to meet the Research and Writing Requirement without taking the actual course. [...]

[Guidelines:]
* One paper, 8-10 pages in length (choose your best work)
* Faculty-graded (either right on the paper itself, or supporting documentation)
* From an Upper Level course for which you have sent us a transcript, or from an EC course
* Documentation of in-text citations and references in the style appropriate to the discipline (in your case, APA format)

Your paper would be reviewed by faculty for its ability to demonstrate research and writing ability with respect your major field of study, and we would then get back to you with the results.
So, unless my Chaucer course has an 8-10 page paper in it, I'll have to find another course that does or take EC's course. Or I could ask my Chaucer teacher if I can make my paper longer ("May I please, please, please write an 8-10 page paper for you?").

I'm assuming the Chaucer course will transfer properly, though my adviser didn't mention it directly.

Meanwhile, I'll keep plugging away on the new plan I have created.

I want to be sure that we are on the same page about this. A major usually requires 30 credits with 15 UL. Through the GRE, it is possible to complete a 30 credit major with 18 UL credits. Those credits will count toward the 30 UL credits needed for the whole bachelor’s degree. You will have 18 UL (major) + 3 UL (depth #2) + 10 UL (2 exams & 1 course) = 31 UL. Yes, 30 UL is a minimum and you can get more, but with this plan you should not need more UL credits/classes.

You have had the same amount of math (College Algebra) that I have so far. If you change your mind and decide to get a double major in math, we can revise your degree plan!!

Thanks for sharing the information from your adviser about the Research & Writing paper. I noticed that Sunshine used a paper from one of her classes to meet this requirement. If we need to know more about the process, we could ask her. (She is busy right now studying for the GRE, though.) That is funny! I doubt that your professor has ever had someone beg to write a longer paper!
