Hello and Business or Psychology

If this is not a limitation then I'd inquire about WGU with your employer (they work with company tuition reimbursement plans all the time; they would be a quick and cheap option if your employer pays for credits).

Both the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology or the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at TESU can be completed within the 18 months. We don't know what your career position so can't be sure which would be best for you.  If you're simply looking for a check box degree (which it sounds like you are) then pick the one that is of more interest to you.

I live in NJ as well and I had to opt for TESU instead of WGU because my employer pays for two classes a semester at my state's tuition rates. WGU was the first choice I made, but they wouldn't allow it due to the competency-based system vs. the per-credit system because it was "confusing".

Honestly, if your employer will pay for 2 courses, that leaves you with $2800 for the residency waiver, $50 for the application fee, and $298 for the grad fee, for a total of $3148 out of your pocket.

WGU is $3370 for the term less a $500 scholarship, leaving you paying $2870 out of pocket without your employer paying anything!

It's like buying a $100 item for 50% off at store A, rather than buying it at full price at store B for $40. Just because you get tuition reimbursement doesn't mean it's a better deal!

Now, WGU doesn't have a Psych degree - but if you opt for a BSBA, then WGU is going to be cheaper if you can bring in 90cr and finish the remaining 30cr in a single term. You may also be able to go much faster than TESU.

Hello allvia!

My particular employer has a credit limit policy in place not a dollar amount.  But you are correct, I am in NJ and limited to NJ state schools.

I picked the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration because right now they are both accepted for my upcoming promotional announcement and because they both interest me.  The Psychology degree is looking a little better as there is no math requirement.  I've been out of school and away from calculus/trig for almost 30 years.

Thanks!

Well, the BA in Psych does have a 3 credit math requirement, but one that is easily met.  There have been some recent options for obtaining the AOS credits - they may not be listed on the DegreeForum Wiki, but it is a very good place to start to build you plan - https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/JS...Psychology

Your cheapest and quickest bet is BSBA at WGU. If you qualify for scholarships it's even cheaper.

At TESU their BSBA only requires college Algebra and stats so you don't need stats. Another option is to take multiple terms at TESU that will save a lot of money if you reach the 16 credits and your employer pays for each term.. But will take more time.

Another thing to consider for speed is prior knowledge. Which do you have the most prior knowledge on business or psychology?

If he/she does 16 credits on tuition reimbursement, however, then no residency waiver applies, so that should be cheaper.

@OldManOfTheSea  Everyone keeps talking about cheaper and not much else. Sure, WGU could be cheaper; if you finish in one term, and a few other factors - TESU would only be minimally more costly because of your specific situation. However, since you are a NJ State Government Employee (this is where you are, and what your career path is).  TESU for either the BSBA or BA in Psych is the only logical choice; you will be looked at with a higher regard being a graduate of a NJ State school - its how things work; unless your Ivy.  I'm in the NE US like you - so I understand how things are in the region (it's how I picked up right away your Gvt job was a NJ based one).

You will be responsible for the residency waiver, accept that (currently $2800) - it won't be covered by your employer. Of course, you also have the costs of the Alt Credits (but that applies to any of the Big3, and any transfer credits into WGU prior to enrollment). You made it clear that this is a time sensitive situation - so I would not recommend that you try to avoid paying it by taking more courses directly with TESU as they take far more time to complete; especially since your employer is only will to pay for 1 course beyond what is required (you need 6 of those 10 covered credits for the cornerstone/capstone courses). Also by having only 2 graded courses (one that should be quite easy to do well in - the cornerstone, and one that requires at least a solid B in to pass, the capstone) you should end up with a very respectable GPA (as all the alt credits are just pass, no impact on GPA).

If the BA in Psych is simply more interesting to you (or fits your job's division/dept better) then do that one. If you think the BSBA is better suited to your work, then don't let the math scare you off - plenty of alt math options to meet those requirement options available. If all the AOS courses or the Psyc are available through Study.com (which I believe they are now?) the cost/time for either choice is pretty much equal.  I'll add that you can always look at WGU if you ever needed a bargain MBA later for business degree purposes; you'd still keep your hometown roots with the BA in Psych from a NJ school (TESU).

This was detailed in another thread but the courses for Psych AOS are all available through study.com. However, because not enough of them count for UL, another provider is required. In order to do a BA Psych you need to get additional UL through coopersmith, UExcel, TECEP, TESU or other options. Study.com currently (as of July 2019) only has 4 UL Psych courses and 3 of them count as electives when you only need 2 electives. So that would leave at least 2 UL courses to be found outside of study.com.

I agree don't let the math of the TESU BSBA scare you. I highly recommend the CSM learn math course, it is painless and amazing. Only $39 too.

Allvia,

Thank you for the link to JSD's path to the TESU psychology degree.

You make good points..  I was curious as to how you picked up on the NJ Govt job so fast.. :-)

Thanks for the tips!  Hopefully I will end up will a decent GPA after the Cornerstone/Capstone classes.  Do you know if TESU let me take them at the same time or does the Cornerstone have to be completed before I take the Capstone?

I don't think it's a matter of which interests me more but a matter of speed and difficulty.  Whichever degree I get to fulfill the requirements of my upcoming promotional job announcement, I fully intend on coming back later and completing the other degree.  Reading through the forum here has helped me to decide that.

Thanks!

I'm still on the lookout for my degree program treasure map hahaha!

The only classes I may try to submit for reimbursement would be the Cornerstone and Capstone.  After.  Doing it any other way requires me to submit the classes to them ahead of time for approval.. And they have been know to not only not approve the course for payment but also inform employees that the degree doesn't apply to the promotional application. They seem to make up rules as they go along and I'm trying to avoid getting caught in that spider web.  I don't want anything to ruin my chances of getting this final promotion.

The Cornerstone and Capstone are graded courses right?

Thanks!

Yes! The Cornerstone and Capstone are both graded. Do you already have some college credit? I was thinking a step too fast earlier when I mentioned to do 18 credits, as I was thinking you may have tuition reimbursement for up to 5 grand/year. In any case, you get more tuition reimbursement than I! That's much better than my treasure err, company offers me!

Now to get back on track, I don't know if you would want to do it this way or not, but as again, do 9 credits through TESU. This is because you haven't decided which BA Psych/BSBA you're going with. Why not just work on the courses that can go towards both first... and decide which while you're working towards them.

Here's a kicker, if you really want both, and don't want to take any more than necessary, you can get both degrees at TESU for the extra cost of the secondary capstone (9 credits total). If you can take an extra 7 credits, you won't need to pay the residency waiver. I think by doing 16 to 18 credits with TESU, in addition to your other courses that compose the 120 credits, can be done within 1 years time.

Yes, you read that right, if you plan carefully enough, you can get BOTH degrees, without taking an extra course. You just need to decide if that second capstone is worth it or not. Further more, if you don't want to pay the residency waiver, by taking an extra 7-9 credits, you get that waived.
