Roughly translated, it says "Dear Sirs, In order to clarify in advance any question you could have in this regard, serve this document to certify that the Universidad Isabel I (UI1) grants its own degree to the following programs of the European Business School of Barcelona (ENEB) ...[degree list].... To do this, and for this purpose, I sign and seal this certificate in place and date indicated. [Signature/Title]"

Does this mean that the degrees are issued by this bullshit school and validated by the University (Similar to how some schools use the Open University Validation System), or do you get an actual degree issued by the actual university (ie they have delegated instruction to this third party). So curious.

This offering reminds me of MSI (Management & Strategy Institute) that also places their programs on sale with Groupon. I purchased a few certs with Groupon for cheap, I still get emails in regards to their "sales" but buying off Groupon was much much cheaper... https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...#pid202760
I love MSI lol I've done so many of their Six Sigma Certs.

So....is this an actual Masters Degree or is it a glorified diploma mill. This is so weird.

It's a Masters Degree, it's not a diploma mill. As Sanatone mentioned (when I did a search on them), they're recognized in European countries such as Germany, but going further than Europe, no one (or not many people) will know them. So, if you want to think of it this way - it's very similar to a State Recognized or Authorized degree in the USA.

Basically, mainly the people in the state would know about the degree... it once again isn't a mill, but doesn't have that National Accreditation or Regional Accreditation. To give you an example of state recognized degrees, I wrote about it here in a discussion about NA/RA/State Approved etc: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...-NA-degree

Other countries don't accredit their schools like the U.S. does. I don't think there's another higher education system that depends on private accreditation organizations that are authorized by the country's department of education. Other countries typically grant a university degree-granting status directly.

State approval in the U.S. is a license that allows a post-secondary school to operate. There's usually a requirement for the school to obtain national or regional accreditation recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or CHEA within five years unless the school qualifies for a religious exemption. A degree from an unaccredited but state-approved school will have limited utility and may even be illegal to use in some places. The federal government, for employment purposes, makes an exception for colleges and universities that are in candidacy status for accreditation.

I would guess that Universidad Isablel I is not well-known outside of Spain. I wouldn't be surprised if it's not well-known in Spain. The school's only 11 years old, it's been recognized for eight years, and it's online. In 2016, they had fewer than 7,000 students.

My thoughts: I value college access in all its novel forms, but I want to douse some passions here.

Pursuing a Groupon degree program for a school that was forced to remove "university" from its name is scraping the bottom of a barrel that's already mid-roll in a downhill race to the bottom.

It really pushes credulity for me, reading the lawsuits and negative news stories that reach back decades, and seems to prey upon a particular mindset of picking up the cheapest piece of paper one can find. The discussion of accreditation seems to be all over the place, since while we have reports that it is "recognized" in Germany, a post on one of the discussion forums listed on the first page of this thread reported this:

"I contacted the Swiss government and they told me that EU Business School is not a state recognized university in Switzerland. They literally told me that the paper of the degree has more value than the academic degree itself.
I then contacted the Spanish government, not easy - nobody feels responsible, but in the end I was lucky and they told me the same as the Swiss. In fact they told me that EU is not allowed to offer any university programs in Spain.
In Germany it was easy - I called the Ministry in Munich, they speak English, and Mrs. Harich told me that EU is not recognized and that they are only allowed to offer the courses they are doing together with two British universities - Roehampton and Derby.
If you want to check my infos, here are the links to the institutions I contacted:
Switzerland - https://www.swissuniversities.ch/en/
Spain - http://www.mecd.gob.es/portada-mecd/en/
Germany - Welcome to the website of the Bavarian State Ministry of Education, Science and the Arts"

Interestingly, those two British unis, Roehampton and Derby, are no longer listed on ENEB's accreditation page (https://eneb.com/accreditations/). I wonder if the whole Groupon deal is simply due to ENEB soon losing its affiliation with yet another institution, the Isabel I online college.

I agree with Sanantone a few posts back in saying that your outcome is going to be iffy no matter what. I admit that there's no harm if the program is structured well enough (honestly, couldn't find too many insights on this particular aspect aside from demands for refunds and some reports of lawsuits), but for a degree itself, eh, I'd advise more caution.

But hey, the Groupon doesn't say you can't get their free tablet deal too: https://www.eneb.com/free-tablet/
