Santa Fe Community College Cuts Programs
#1
Is this one of community colleges with low out of state tuition that is suggested sometimes? There are some interesting thoughts about the future of community colleges in the article as well.

Considering the population around Erie it is very surprising that they didn't already have a community college nearby!

Kind of odd that is the closest community college and it's in another state.

That is something that many residents have said for decades.  Although, at least back in the 90’s, Edinboro was the least expensive University in Pennsylvania.  Edinboro is only about 30 minutes from the city of Erie.   This is also coming around the same time that many of the state colleges are merging resources.

I don't remember it being suggested before but they've got good tuition rates. https://www.sfcc.edu/tuition-and-fees/ $61/credit for out of state residents taking 6 or fewer credits, $144/credit if you're out of state and taking 7 or more credits.

They are not one we've suggested before (or at least not that I can remember) - but it looks like they should be.  I wonder if it's because of the lack of online options they may have had in the past?

They seem to have a few of the somewhat more challenging classes to find (intermediate accounting, managerial accounting, criminal justice, calculus II), plus a few unusual offerings (mostly languages: Portuguese I, Japanese I, Arabic III; but also an intriguing one called 'International Horror Cinema'), all of which are currently online.

It's seems like the real strength for this college is in Film and Digital Media Arts. There are many many options in this category which - at least for now - are offered online. There are some other unique categories too, but these appear to require on-campus attendance.

Their class lookup function is a PITA to use. Many CCs provide a PDF list of all classes on offer per term. Here, you have to select the term/semester, and the category, and then get taken to a list of a few classes. Considering there are 40+ categories, this makes searching a real hassle.
There might be more good finds in there, but someone else will need to look them up.

The course descriptions page in the catalog is slightly less annoying to use. But it's still not great.

That's much easier, although it's a shame it doesn't include info on whether the course is offered online.

Also, this?
Quote:A math course taken more than three years ago cannot fulfill a prerequisite for a subsequent math course unless a student can demonstrate proficiency. A math or science course taken more than five years ago cannot be used to fulfill a prerequisite for another course. Students may fulfill math prerequisites by scoring at the appropriate level on the college’s math placement test
Ridiculous. I get with CS and IT, things as changing rapidly. And perhaps even in some science sectors, after 10 years things may have developed somewhat. But maths? Exactly how much is college algebra going to change in 5 years which would render an individual unable to manage?

I've had several colleges tell me I needed to retake my math after 5 years. I was annoyed but now I understand why. It's not that the principles have changed. It's that you forget how to use them when you don't use them for years. I'm so glad I took College Algebra and Introduction to Statistics on Sophia. I have both from community college years ago and only remembered a handful of things in each course. Now I'm using some of the things I learned in both classes often in other courses.
