I can't believe that I am very nervous about starting the Masters with the very first course next week. :willynilly: I feel worse than when I have to stand and brief the General. I'll be taking "HIST-520 Graduate Seminal in American History". The syllabus was scary. It's nothing but writing, with a major Research Paper of 3750 words written in Chicago style, worth 40% of the grade. I guess Google will have to come thru for me again so I can learn this new writing style that I've never done.
I need to keep occupied with school so this Afghanistan tour passes by quick.
Wish me luck.

I was very apprehensive also when I first started business ethics. It consisted of 12 papers with the final one being 15 pages. Just use that nervousness to your advantage as a motivator. Start the assignments right away, don't wait for the class to start. Get way ahead of the schedule and you will not feel nervous anymore. Trust me.

I'm always nervous before starting something important, so it's totally normal to feel this way! You may feel a little uncomfortable at first, but you'll be an expert in no time!

Just remember how you felt before taking your first CLEP exam and realize how great things were on the other end!
But as ryoder says, get started right away. Be overprepared if you can. This way you can solicit feedback from the instructor (in lieu of the Specific Exam Feedback section on here hehe) to find out if you're going in the right direction with your work.

Good luck! You'll do great! Also, just an fyi, you can google some software programs that work with your word processor and will format your work into Chicago Style (or APA or whatever). I think they run about $40.

I'm halfway through my accelerated MHA program and I start a new course every 6 weeks so I get this feeling every other month! I'm in my stats class right now which had me terrified, but the teacher is excellent and great with answering questions. Get to know the instructor or mentor by emailing a short note and that will put your mind at ease.
I have had to learn APA over the last 2 years, but just got out of a class with an instructor who took it to whole other level! I recommend OWL at Purdue it is a great resource for all things writing and very easy to understand. I also recommend Stylease software. I'm not sure if they do Chicago or not. It is very inexpensive and works with Word. I also recommend bibme.org for your citations. Again it has all formats.
Don't worry you will do great! If I can go back to school at 45 and go from no degree to grad school in under 2 years it is very doable. Just realize that it will be a lot of writing so get on a schedule and stick with it, it makes it much easier. Good luck! Enjoy the process!

Can't share anything more than what was said above, except for a reference for writing that has made the whole writing process much easier. It is a small flip book entitled "A Pocket Style Manual, 5th Edition" by diana Hacker. It really covers everything and is quick and easy to find, with samples. ISBN 13: 0978-0-312-59324-7 or ISBN-10: 0-312-59324-4. Was worth every penny.
It covers MLA, APA, Chicago, grammar, punctuation and mechanics, research, usage and gramatical terms... you name it.

If your school gives you access to ProQuest which is an online library, use the "Cite This" button which will show a popup where you can choose the format such as APA V6 and it will give you a bibliography entry for it.
I use this a lot and it saves me from having to figure out how to cite a journal article every time.
Then in text citations are easy once you have done about 10 of them. It comes very naturally for APA format for me now.
