JJ_in_NC - CLEPs Info
#1
On Monday, I passed the Introductory Sociology CLEP with a 67.

I was really happy about that because I only studied for 4 days. If I'd failed, I'd have had to reconsider my plan to take a bunch of CLEPs and probably would have had to lower my expectations and plan on taking a lot longer to finish my degree.

Here is what I did:

1. I studied InstantCert's flashcards twice.
2. I went through Modern States pretty quickly, although I paid more attention to the questions and the full-length practice test at the end. I got an 83 on that practice test.
3. Finally, I went through the first InstantCert full-length practice test and studied what I got wrong.

Honestly, I did not feel that confident during the test. I took the full 90 minutes. I feel like I'm a pretty good test-taker so I was able to eliminate answer choices for most questions and make educated guesses, but if you're not good at taking tests, then you should probably do more studying than I did.

Thanks to Modern States for the prep and the voucher! It was super easy to apply the voucher on the Collegeboard site and I did not have to pay for anything.

I took Introductory Psychology CLEP yesterday and barely passed with a 52.

I went through the InstantCert flashcards just once and then did Modern States and got like a 95% on their full-length practice test and got overconfident. I think I was really lucky to pass and will definitely study more for my next test.

Next is Human Growth and Development. I am hoping to take it on Monday or Tuesday.

On Tuesday, I passed Human Growth and Development with a 54!

I promised to study harder but ended up only getting through the InstantCert flashcards once again. That, combined with the Modern States course, got me the pass.

The overlapping knowledge from doing all of the psychology-related exams definitely helped. I still felt like I'm doing a lot of guessing, but as long as I'm passing, I don't feel like "overstudying".

Next up: Educational Psychology. My goal is to take that tomorrow or Monday.

CLEPs have become an underappreciated option, so it's nice to see someone taking advantage of them.

With CLEP being free through Modern States, I'm not sure why more people aren't taking them. I have taken four CLEPs so far and have not spent a single penny.

Latest update on my CLEP journey:

I just took my 4th CLEP yesterday -- Introduction to Educational Psychology. This time, I decided to stop testing my luck and gave myself a couple more days to study. That allowed me to go through my two sources more thoroughly (IC and Modern States) and it seems like it worked -- I got a 62!

Next up: Analyzing & Interpreting Literature CLEP

Agree!  We've had two children who have utilized CLEP and DSST exams prior to or along with utilizing Sophia, Straighterline, or Study.com to earn credits.

Through Modern States, one can take up to five CLEPs for free, right? That's up to a year of credit if one focuses on the ones worth six semester-hours.

Good luck! I believe it's down to three now, but back in the day this one was worth six semester-hours and it was a glorified literacy test. I took it first because people told me that it was a confidence booster, and they were right.

CLEPs and DANTEs IMO are some of the most underutilized avenues for credits. Granted, I understand why, but it's refreshing to see people discuss about these. The foundation of DegreeInfo/Forum is predominately (though before my time) based on not only alt credit-merciful institutions, but portfolios and CLEPs. Bear's guidebook when I peruse through its pages is practically a blueprint for here and the sister forum

I can't recall exactly, but isn't there also an affordable option for individuals to enroll through some courses via SUNY

When I did a quick search, I didn't see any limit to how many CLEPs you can take through Modern States. I guess we'll find out -- A&I Lit will be my 5th!

TESU's CLEP equivalency list still shows Analyzing & Interpreting Literature as 6 credits:
