3rd and 4th year clep tests?
#1
Most clep tests that are offered appear to be for 1st and 2nd year classes. Is there a way to test out of 3rd and 4th year classes? Bottom line, I am trying to find the best path to get my bachelors in business adm. My current projected path is completing my AA by testing out of 75% of classes offered, and finishing somewhere else. I am thinking about state univ. but have been reading a lot about the big three on this site. I posted here yesterday and got some advice and called charter oaks today for some info but they didn't seem to understand what I was asking. I really like the self study/testing out approach and this website has been my best investment so far, I am just trying to find the best way (fastest, cheapest) way to get my degree. I apoligize if I am repeating myself and asking too many questions in my posts but this is all so new.

The DSST exams (also sometimes called "Dantes") include upper-level (3rd and 4th year) subjects. If you go to the Excelsior site, for example http://www.excelsior.edu, and look under the publications link, you will find this book. This will detail the various upper-level tests, including Excelsior's own ECE series. Here's a direct link. https://www.excelsior.edu/Excelsior_Coll...atalog.pdf Look at page seven of the pdf for the ECE exams (mostly upper level and some other schools also accept them) and Section 3 for the CLEP and Dantes rankings for Excelsior. It's a pdf so give it some time to download.

In addition to the great advise you already got, TESC considers anything above 100 to be upper level credit. So, there isn't a need to earn specifically 300 or 400 level credits, as long as they are 200 level or higher, they will "count." This is a great way to use CLEP, DSST, and community college classes to meet all 120 credits. (there is a 90 credit cap on community college credit though)

Hi Jennifer
Thanks for the advice. So after I get my AA, I could enroll with charter oaks and keep taking clep courses as long as they apply towards my bachelors, right? Does charter oaks have a maximum amount of clep scores that will apply, I mean would I have to take a minimum amount of classes there like I have to with AA?

The whole appeal of the "Big Three" (TESC, Excelsior, and COSC) is that you do not have to take any of their classes and there is no residency requirement. For many of the degrees we discuss on this board, you can complete (nearly) all the requirements via testing. There is no minimum requirement of hours to complete via traditional coursework or through these institutions themselves. If people on here do take the class, it is for another reason (no exam available, difficult material better learned in a class, cheaper or more convenient alternative).

For a couple detailed sites about people who have done this whole process, check out these links:

Bachelor's Degree in 6 Months Roadmap - Introduction

Lawrie Miller's BA in 4 Weeks. Online degrees by distance learning. BA degree and graduate degees - Accelerated Master Degrees by Distance Learning.

You may find the 123collegedegree one especially interesting because that person gives a pretty detailed account of how they earned a business degree from Excelsior. Hope this helps, I wasn't sure if you had checked out those sites yet or not already!

I wished I would have known about the big 3 before. I have been paying $300 per credit hour at Ashford. This almost makes me sick!
