Hello,
I have been lurking in the forums for quite a while and recently registered.
My goal is to complete a BA degree at TESC. I want a BA degree with majors in English and History. The general education requirements are all fulfilled with prior coursework, CLEPs, and DSSTs.
From my exploration of the forums here I have deduced a few important piece of information.
1) Both areas have to be within the same degree. Both will be a BA; thus, I do not believe I need to worry about this.
2) I am allowed 9 credits of overlap. At the moment I do not believe that there are any classes that I have that overlap. I don’t think I need to worry about anything here.
3) I can transfer all of my credits from 7 different schools to TESC. Even the ones I earned all the way back in 1987. All of the schools that I attended are regionally accredited.
My main question is about upper level (300-400) classes. Specifically how many do I need? Being the frugal person that I am, I do not want to pay any money to TESC until I am ready to apply for my degree. Well, actually I plan on paying the 75 dollars when I perceive that I am really close to done. My perception is that TESC requires you to pay if you want to play. Thus, as I understand it, I cannot ask them any questions at the moment.
At the moment I have enough credits for history and need to earn more English credits. Specifically I have 36 history credits. Of these 36 credits, 15 are upper level. One of the history classes is actually numbered as religion (history of Christian church). The church history class is lower level; thus, even if TESC doesn’t accept this as history credit I still have enough to meet the 33 credits (only 15 UL though) for the history major.
I currently have 24 credits that apply towards the English major. Most of these credits (18) are from the three CLEP literature exams. Of the remaining 6 credits only 3 are upper level. I plan on taking 3 more upper level classes (9 credits) from BYU independent study to get my 33 English credits. This would give me a total of 12 upper level English credits.
So my question is how many upper level units do I need? Will TESC require me to have 18 upper level credits for both English and history? This would mean 9 more upper level credits (3 history and 6 English). Or, does the 18 upper level credit requirement apply to both areas? This would result in my having more than enough upper level credits.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your knowledge with me.
Some addition info:
I also have 9 upper level religion credits. One of these, poetic literature of the Old Testament may be applicable to the English major. I am not sure if these credits are applicable towards anything; however, they can certainly be used for elective credit.
I don’t have a class that fulfils the non-western literature class; thus, I may have to take one class at TESC to meet this requirement. TESC has an upper level African Lit class that would fulfill this requirement.
