American Government CLEP - best book option?
#1
I am gathering resources for the American Government CLEP exam. I do plan to use the IC flashcards.

However (call me old-school) I also like to have a book in my hand. The REA books are usually my go-to resource. Not too many people mentioned it in the feedback forum. Also, reviews on Amazon aren't stellar.

Some folks in the feedback section did mention the CliffsQuickReview but it is from 2001 - seems kind-of old.

Thoughts on these two options? Something different to suggest? TIA

I took the American Government CLEP in 2008 I believe and I used the free Cliffs Notes. American Government hasn't changed much in the last 15 years. Yes, specific laws have changed, but the amendments, constitution, election procedures are still basically exactly the way it is for a long time now. The test is not going to ask Mitch McConnell's politcal beliefs or the opinions of the FISA court.

Don't take the exam lightly, but IMO Cliffs Notes, Instacert and living in America is more than adequate to pass this exam.

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.

Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.

Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.

Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.

Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

American Government

I immediately went to Amazon and typed in "living in America." I was a bit confused when James Brown music came up. You literally mean LIVING in America. (lol - Face-palm)

Also, I checked out the link you provided. Is that the same material as the book? Thanks.

LOL!! You made my day.

It's been years, but it looks the same to me. I had used a pdf version. If you're the tangible type, a visit to a local library might produce a copy for free.

Also if you are enrolled in TESC, they give you free access to the NJ State library online, another good resource.

I also suggest Sparknotes, I used them to help study for this one. If you are using IC don't forget the specific exam feedback I believe there are some study guides made by others who have taken this exam. I am old school too but a book can go into way to much info for this exam. and I agree the things they test on this exam will not change in 15 years.

Been a silent reader for awhile and have decided to chime in on this subject since I took the test today.

Test was much harder than I expected. I studied from several common sources three times a week for three weeks and did not feel prepared.

The version of the test I took had very few Bill of Rights questions, even fewer "famous cases" questions and questions about how legislature are passed were virtually non existent.

The test was very heavy on opinionated pieces about political parties, political jargon and abstract political ideology.

None of the study sources adequately prepared me for the test and it was only Peterson's material that semi lived up to the degree of difficulty the actual test presented.

The REA book and Sparknotes were good for this test.
