Degree Questions
#1
Hello. Because I’ve mostly finished the general education portion of my degree through CLEP and SOPHIA, I was hoping someone could help me with a few questions I have about the remainder of my degree.

What BSBA degrees are easiest to get through upper level SDC courses (accounting, marketing, general, finance)? I don’t see a sample degree plan for TESU BSBA Accounting on the degreeforum wiki. Is it not possible to fulfill the UL part of accounting through SDC or other alternative credit?

Due to the new requirements, what is the best way to get affordable RA credits that should transfer to TESU or WGU/other Big 3?

I’ve seen that TEL Learning is a good way to get RA credit. Do you know if it will transfer to TESU?

I would greatly appreciate if you could answer any of these questions for me. Thank you!

Accounting is possible through SDC; I just hadn't done one because I've been doing them as they come up and you're the first to ask about Accounting. Smile Marketing is also possible but isn't on the wiki yet for similar reasons. As for what's "easiest", that's going to be a matter of opinion.

The most affordable source for RA credits is going to be TEL Learning. They have a limited number of courses but they are still going to be the cheapest. Because they are transcripted at an RA institution, they are more or less guaranteed to transfer to TESU. What's not guaranteed is what they will transfer as. We can make some reasonable assumptions, such as Principles of Psychology transferring in as Psych 101 at TESU. What they are brought in as will largely depend upon which college/university they have been transcripted at. https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/TE...University should help you to decide which transcripting institution to use.

You're going to wind up duplicating some of your credits when you bring in your RA gen eds but that is something that is pretty unavoidable with TESU's new policies in place.

Thanks! There are a couple UL classes that I can't find on SDC, Such as Federal Income Tax I. Is there a place that shows SDC UL equivalency for Accounting or Marketing degrees?

You can take Federal Income Tax as a TECEP exam for $75/cr ($225 total).

Or you can do the University of Northern Alabama Accounting Career Completion Program, for $545/course ($182/cr).  They have 8 UL accounting courses (you only need 1), including Federal Income Tax, Auditing & Financial Reporting.

People that get accounting degrees are usually trying to get licensed as a CPA.  That requires 150 total college credits +30cr over the standard BSBA degree.

All the business UL are not that hard.  They are just standard courses with required papers and are usually easier to pass.

“Begin with the end in mind.”

What is the intended use of the degree? Are you going to pursue a career or particular profession? Or is this to “check the box.”

The reason I suggest that is because “easy” is a relative term and having a particular BSBA might not get you where you want to go.

You mentioned you are considering accounting. This is what my degree will be when I finish. I’ve worked in the field since 2006 in government and absolutely no one I’ve met with the degree got it because it’s easy. I was fortunate to be hired based on my work experience in banking and then as an internal promotion candidate, my qualifications needed were different than an external candidate. Now, the service requires a particular set of accounting credit hours in specific courses. A BSBA Accounting candidate lacking a class or two is ineligible. A BSBA general or marketing would not be eligible for hire.

Likewise with your state accounting board. I intend to sit for the CPA exam and reached out to my state board because they were silent on distance education. Basically, I was told graded classes count, generally credit by exam would not. I fought back on two courses because I hold a Certified Fraud Examiner credential and they will allow TESU’s awarded credit for ACC 407 Financial Fraud Examination, 3 credits; ACC 406 Forensic Accounting 3 credits to count. They would NOT allow the University of North Alabama’s accounting completion classes. My state board said the content is akin to a CPA review class, as UNA uses Wiley/CPA Excel material repackaged as a class. UNA’s Masters in Accounting works though. (The UNA accounting completion syllabus makes clear the content is “similar” to their university course.)

I would submit that a distance education BSBA/Accounting is more appropriate if you are already working in the field of accounting or taxation. You can pass a test and earn 3 hours in Financial Accounting - but can you close the monthly books of an organization? You can TECEP Federal Taxation, but do you know the questions to ask to determine how you will research how Title 26 and the accompanying regulations will treat a transaction? Easy is relative.

If you are intent on BSBA/Accounting - you CAN do most of it through SDC. (BSBA-Accounting CPA you can NOT meet the requirements on SDC) but know how the classes you take will impact job prospects and or sitting for a CPA.

After all of that, if you need a “check the box” BSBA - pick the General Management. Lord knows, if I didnt want CPA after my name, I would have picked that and been done by now.

BSBA Accounting plan created on the wiki with the caveat that it may not work for students wishing to become CPAs. Marketing will be next.
