New people can not receive PMs by default
#1
Hello new members!

Your ability to receive private messages is turned off by default so if you send one of us a PM, we can’t respond back to you.

Please turn this function on if you send us a PM so we can answer your questions.

I’ve responded to quite a few folks asking questions and don’t find out until after writing lengthy responses and hitting send, that they can’t receive it.

Mods - wasn’t sure where to post this but please move if this isn’t the right spot - thanks!!

The Off Topic forum is probably the best place, but this thread is more likely to be read in the General forum, so we can leave it here for now. It probably doesnt matter where it gets posted since a lot of the new people who send PMs don't read these messages beforehand.

I don't think its a feature of the forum, but I think it would be better if the forum automatically set your account to be able to receive PMs when you send your first one. Or at least warn them that the person won't be able to respond unless they turn it on, and give them the option to do so right then.

I can't really think of any upside to letting people send PMs without being able to receive them. I kind of understand why it defaults to OFF, but I think changing the default to ON is probably the best thing to do. This PM thing happens too often.
