It is kind of you to ask, although I never asked for help in choosing coursework, subjects, or even recommendations for schools. My intention was to find a current database that lists accredited schools in the US that are recognized by the US Department of Education, which is currently not updating its database due to political issues and lack of budget appropriations. Johnathan Whatley provided me with some helpful information. Perhaps this forum is not the appropriate venue for asking higher education questions related to the US educational system, as it appears to be an international platform. My mistake.

Your questions were not invasive to me. Just irrelevant. My intention was not to mislead anyone but to get them to critically think about choosing an "accredited institution." Statements like "go to an RA school," or "avoid this particular school" are simply opinions from an anonymous source on a discussion board. The critical thinking student needs evidence-based sources, such as a current database, to research schools. Research includes the history of accreditation, the level of accreditation, and national, programmatic, or regional accreditation (RA).

The US Department of Education is now underfunded, with a mandate to return all educational roles to the individual states. The database, which is not updated, provides users with information on educational institutions that are accredited, have lost accreditation, or are on probation.

With the defunding and decentralization of the US Department of Education, now more than ever, students need to ascertain the legitimacy and accreditation level of an institution of higher learning. Buzz words like "recognized by" or "member of" are not enough! Thank you, Jonathon, for pointing out CHEA, which serves as a "primary national voice for accreditation." I suspect my employer should be satisfied with that organization's database to facilitate tuition reimbursement, but more importantly, I have an updated database to research a school's legitimacy.

The CHEA directory basically says the name of the school and its accreditation with a link to the accreditor. Employers are probably going to have to develop their own criteria for acceptable accreditation since the US Department of Education is currently not updating the website. Simple solution: I will now have to email the tuition reimbursement folks for preapproval.

Way above my pay grade. There are numerous articles about this. I simply hope students can get their federal loans and grants. Otherwise, college will be out of reach for many. With that said, I appreciate this forum always finding affordable avenues to obtaining a legitimate, accredited degree.

This statement really adds to the importance of an institution being recognized by the US Department of Education. I can see why my employer requires that distinction.

Yes, CHEA and USDOE are different... Having said that, I would recommend having both. DEAC is the only NA that has both, and that's the main reason I recommend DEAC (NA) institutions over other NA counterparts, unless it's Beal University or VUL, etc, that hit a specific niche...
